MJ it could be almost anything. We really need more information. I wouldn't expect a CEL to be able to tell me what's going on anyway in this case.

First, have you had any moosing noises? Those are the usual signs of an IAC that's dying, and if your engine can't get any air at idle, it will stall. I doubt this is the problem but since IACs on our cars are known to fail it seems like a reasonable place to start.

The other two areas to consider are fuel delivery (how is your fuel filter?) and spark (have you had any misfires or anything like that lately?).

im not exactly sure what an IAC is but no i havent had any misfires or anything....the car is stalling when im driving now too...we cleaned out the throttle body and it seemed to be runnin good....then it started to stall again so im not really sure what to do i just put in some fuel injector cleaner in it...i dont really know what else to do

engine code help

okay so i scanned my engine and i got these codes....p1504 which is the 'intake air control circuit malfunction'. and p1520 which is the 'intake manifold runner control fault'. what parts do i need to fix this? thanks for the help. and maybe a location of the part under the hood? lol

I merged the two threads, because they are probably related.

The first code (idle air) is probably the IAC I mentioned earlier.

The second one is the intake manifold runner control, IMRC. See the stickied thread at the top of this forum to learn about the IMRC.

The car has a standing rev limiter of 4000 RPMs. Don't do that.

Here's the bottom line.

An engine does not start because it is missing one of three things: air, fuel, or spark.

AIR

The air induction system consists of the air filter/box, intake pipe, and indirectly, the Idle Air Control Valve.

The Idle Air Control Valve meters air into the intake when you aren't using the throttle. If your IACV is stuck closed, the car will not idle or start.

FUEL.

First, do you have fuel in your tank?

The fuel delivery system consists of the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel lines, and fuel injectors. Turn the key to the ON position in a quiet place. You should hear the fuel pump "whirr" quietly between the back seat bottoms. If you do not hear this, your fuel pump is dead. If you DO hear this, your fuel pump is arguably OK.

The fuel filter should be changed about once a year. If it is full of dirt, it will cut off fuel flow through it.

Bad fuel lines will be obviously wet and smelly, and leave puddles on the ground. Easy to diagnose.

The fuel injectors won't usually cause a no-start situation, since there are six of them. But if you have starting issues, you might have "flooded" the car. To remedy this, press the throttle to the floor, and crank it 'till it fires up. This makes the injectors cease pulsing, and adds the additional benefit of bypassing a potentially bad IACV.

SPARK

The ignition system consists of the coil pack, plug wires, and spark plugs. Like the fuel injection system, these parts will seldom cause a no-start situation, since there are six parts that rarely fail all at once.

ECU

All of these systems are controlled and monitored by the car's computer, which you can never rule out. But chances are you will have many more problems than these if you have a bad ECU.

Your course of action: listen closely for fuel pump sound. Crank engine with the throttle to the floor. Crank for several seconds until it starts.

I'm not sure that a faulty IMRC would not let the car start. I know that it'd run like a POS. Do you have any vacuume leaks? I think it's possible. The P1504 I'm not too familiar with. But it definately sounds like an air problem. Is your MAF plugged up? When you guys cleaned the throttle body, did you put everything back as it was? How'd the gasket look?

#23 ·
yeah everything was put back together....how will i know if the mass air flow is plugged up? thats what MAF is right? lol i just dont know what to do anymore and i dont wanna put too much more money into this...i think i got to drive it for about 2 weeks lol tomorrow i might take the fuel filter off and see if its plugged up or anything just to see if the fuel is being pumped.

[edit] and how would i check for vacuum leaks??

okay...i called the garage up and they said it was stupid to buy the IACV but i didnt think so, i trust u guys more than them lol but anyways....they said sumthing about some 'shreader valve' that shows the fuel pressure? if so, where is this @ so i can check it out?? pics would help out lots! thanks yall....btw if these cars dont have them...what would be the best way to flush the tank? especially with a full tank! lmao

could this be my problem??
Auto Recall Date: 02/06/2001
Vehicle Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES
Estimated Vehicles Affected: 120000
2000 MERCURY COUGAR Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5L V6 ENGINES. THE BATTERY CABLE WAS MISROUTED AND ITS ATTACHMENT TO THE ALTERNATOR CABLE WAS UNDER-TORQUED. IF MISROUTED, THE CABLE COULD CONTACT THE POWER
STEERING LINE AND THE INSULATION COULD WEAR, RESULTING IN AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
Defect Consequence:
THE SHORT COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A FIRE, STALLING, OR A NO-START CONDITION.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BATTERY CABLE TO THE ALTERNATOR FOR DAMAGE AND, IF IT IS DAMAGED, WILL REPLACE THE CABLE. ADDITIONALLY, THE ROUTING OF THE CABLE WILL BE CORRECTED, AS NECESSARY, AND A ROUTING CLIP WILL BE ADDED. ALSO THE TORQUE ON THE ALTERNATOR ATTACHMENT OF THE CABLE WILL BE CHECKED AND, AS REQUIRED, WILL BE TIGHTENED TO SPECIFICATION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 22, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Auto Recall Date: 08/30/2004
Vehicle Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Estimated Vehicles Affected: 88600
2000 MERCURY COUGAR Defect Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER IN THE FUEL DELIVERY MODULE (FDM) CAN REDUCE, AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE.
Defect Consequence:
THIS MAY CAUSE ENGINE HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER, SURGING, AND OTHER SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. OVER TIME, THE FILTER MAY BECOME SUFFICIENTLY BLOCKED TO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
THIS ACTION IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN AND IS NOT BEING CONDUCTED UNDER THE SAFETY ACT. ALL OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FDM WITH A NEW DESIGN AT NO CHARGE IF THE OWNER REPORTS THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS ANY OF THE IDENTIFIED SYMPTOMS. THE FREE REPLACEMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR A PERIOD OF 10 YEARS FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, WITH NO MILEAGE LIMIT. THE CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON APRIL 16, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.
