Consider it being up there with doing a replacement tranny job for an ATX. So the whole subframe is coming out, transmission, axles. And you're also replacing the cars ECU (behind the power steering tank) with one from a MTX car and the PATs chip.

You're then going to remove your center console and the whole PNRD assembly, your pedal assembly, cut the carpet to run the shift cables and then install the new pedal assembly (neutral safety switch), and MTX shift gate.

You are far, far better off getting a donor car (which should be dirt cheap nowadays) so that way you have every nut & bolt needed. Plus the PATs chip and ECU so you can actually start the car. If you have a shop do it I bet it's probably close to $2k with labor. You can make a little bit of that back if they buy your old trans and donor parts car off you. Since they could just turn that into an ATX at this point. If it's even worth their time.

That also doesn't include replacing parts that you should probably do while the whole thing is out. Control arms, inner & outer tie rods, bushings and stuff like that. I think mine, including cost of the donor car, was around $1k. Took about a week to do, and I had help, but there was some computer issues that tripped it up.

If this car isn't your daily driver, then yes. With the right tools, plenty of jack stands and a couple jacks, plus containers for the fluids it will take you a few days, maybe a couple weeks if you've never torn it apart before. You shouldn't have issues w/rusted bolts being in AZ so consider that a blessing.

Remember, you're tearing down the front end of 2 cars so plan accordingly. Otherwise you'll find yourself w/a stripped donor car and now a blocked driveway because you can't move it out of the way and piles of unmarked nuts & bolts.

Someone here did it both on their own and as their first major project. They had a few hiccups but got it done.

Your other option, as everyone will tell you, is to just buy an MTX car and swap over whatever you want to keep.

piles of unmarked nuts & bolts.
Bag and tag your bolts. Otherwise, half your time be just fishing for the right bolt. Just get some zip lock bags or brown paper bags and a sharpie.

Even though I've got nothing done for my build, I've got a bag for the transmission bolts, oil pan bolts, cross member bolts ect. You will be sincerely glad you did it.

Unless your car is heavily modded or holds some strong sentimental value, just go trade it for one with three pedals.

i had finally started the swap. and doing it day by day in no real hurry ,, took me a bit cause of school and got another car " Focus ST"

well im doing the Swap im going to replace the 250K 2.5 in the cougar with a reman ford one. was going to go 3.0 but dont wanna deal with finding a place to tune it, n more $$$$$ ..well save that for the ST, and plus the Cougar is going to be my DD and my audio car.

Engine and Trans have been ripped out and new engine is getting painted " UIM, Covers" and waiting on some parts ..wanna replace all part with new motorcarft ones.

Two things going through my mind right now.
1. Must be a sarcastic humor post, just a little poorly worded
or
2. Its an actual question, just poorly worded.

I'm really hoping its not #3, which I wont even speak of becaue it would be painfully embarrasing for you.

If its an actual question, can you clarify a little?
Are you really saying the car does not TURN without the clutch and brake pressed?
It seems more likely your saying the car does not turn ON without them both pressed.
If thats the case, then theres no problem. I dont even know if thats a design feature on our car because in 32 years of driving Ive never once tried to start a vehicle witout the brake pressed.
I believe all newer cars have that as a design safety feature though.
If it wasnt a feature on the MTX cougar, it probably was on the ATX, and you probably left whatever hardware triggers that interlock installed.

remember, and atx you need to hit the brake to start the car, im assuming there is a starter lock out switch or something on the brake to prevent you from starting it

Starting the car is not the problem.. I’m just trying to figure out why ...is the only way it starts is if i push the brake n clutch in to turn it on ...are all the cougar “MTX “ like that ? If so than already just new to me ..

no... like i just said, automatics are like that. you must have a switch on the brake making that happen

#25 ·
You changed the brake pedal assembly, right? I think you had to in order to add the clutch??

Looks likw theres 2 brake switches. Looks like the left one in the diagram might need to be bypassed and jumped
