As being a proud Mercury owner of 6 Mercs why do people put Ford Emblems on their Cougars?
Most of the people here bought their cars so they can have something different.Putting the Ford Emblem
makes it look boring. So what if Europe does it.Merkur is gone thats the only reason.
Be proud its a Merc.
My C2 has a 2001 Merc Sable grill emblem in the place of my trunk emblem. It cost $9
This just carries over to all of the Clowns that take a Merc Capri and put a Mustang nose on it
then call it a Mustang.

Can't answer that one, but I can tell you why I replaced my Mercury badge with a Cougar head. I simply think the Mercury badge is ugly, and I have no pride in Mercury. I bought my car because of what it looked like, and because I got more for my dollar than I would have with any other new car out there.

So far I have owned a Pontiac, two Honda's (same exact year, model, color, options), a Toyota, Mitsubishi (two if you include my Wifes car), and now my Cougar. I hold no alligance to any one auto maker.

There is also this thing called being different.. Lets see.. identify ANY part (besides the badging) that has a Mercury logo?

Also some of us happen to work for Ford and like that badge better than 3 hockey sticks.. Dont like it?? Good, one less person that will do it :)

in Europe it was called the Ford Cougar... and secondly there are only a few places where the Mercury logo is stamped.. Your key, Your drivers door with all the information and the rear emblem.. The car is built by Ford.. all the parts are Ford parts... 99.9% of the car says FORD... Having said that my car lost its Mercury emblems over a year ago...

you don't have to like what I did but you can't say that I did anything wrong.. its not like I threw a Lincoln or Jaguar emblems on there... THE FORD COUGAR EXISTS

Q for Ford badged Cougar owners:

If there was NO Ford Cougar in Europe, would you still have put Ford emblems on, or just shaved the Merc badge?

Just curious.

mercrs: there's ford badges on my car cuz im in the process of actually converting my car to be a ford cougar... it'll have all the parts that are on the ones in europe... not to mention it's kinda neat to wake up in the morning, and drive the ONLY ford cougar in my state... and one of the very very very few in the country that's like mine!!!!

linkman: if it were not for the ford cougar, it'd be kinda hard to have the ford grill on the front... so i most likely would not be doing the conversion... make sense??

I'm doing the Ford logo conversion too. I even picked up an ST200 logo and floor mats from Bat Inc. to go along with my st200 rear strut brace. I think the whole idea is akin to all the ricers who take their Hondas and Acuras and put SiR or TypeR logos on them....they aren't actually JDM cars (Japanese Domestic Market) but it's cool to make it look like it is.... And like Crispy and others have said....how many parts are actually Mercury? Not that many...

Although the Cougar was built in North America and the Duratec engine was also mostly engineered here, the car was actually conceived, designed and engineered under Ford's Small and Medium Car Centre in Europe. The only things Mercury about the car is the emblem and the Cougar brand name. Why should I be proud of that? The car's true lineage doesn't even go back to the previous Cougars but to the Ford Probe and before that the European Ford Capri. Personally, I'm not going to swap the Mercury emblem for a Ford emblem but I don't really care if anybody else does.

I can understand it, I'd like to get rid of my Mercury emblems because I really don't care for Mercury much either. But I don't have a whole lot of loyalty to Ford either, so no Ford logos on my car. My loyalty is to the Cougar, and will likely replace the Mercury badge with a Cougar badge.

I like that Climate control thing though, that's really cool.

Do people put Chevy emblems on Firebirds? They are the same other than fenders and tail lights.
What about the Mercury God head or the Cougar Head?
I am a long time Capri owner and I am sick of people putting Mustang tailights on them.
I never thought it would travel over to the Cougar.
Anybody ever Consider the Merkur emblem that is europeon as it gets.

Heres a question for you Merc.. Whats an RS merc?? Is that like the SS and RS model Camaro? Like I said before.. If you dont like it, great you wont do it.

Heh... kinda what I was thinking. If you don't like it, don't do it. Just that simple. Don't go starting a whole post about it in General simply so you can whine about it. As for the Camaro = Firebird comment... Have you actually SEEN either of these two cars, lately? They have the same general body shape, but I'd like to try some of the hash you're smoking if you think it's just the headlights and taillights.

actually if I didn't have to get the rear center hole welded over and then painted I would have a totally debadged Cougar... but seeing as my 30 dollar emblem is cheaper than that option I will stick with it...

BTW Edgecat... those cars are TOTALLY different indeed! pass that crack pipe this way after you get a hit.. heh!

There is no such thing as a Merkur in Europe. Merkurs were rebadged European Fords. Although the Ford Motor Company was started and based in the United States it has been a global company since very early on. After WWII, Ford in Europe operated as a separate entity within the company with its own design and engineering facilities. Even today, there are very clear differences in design and engineering philosophies between European Fords and North American Fords. Our Cougar is definitely a European Ford being sold in North America just like the Contour/Mystique, the Focus. Compare those with North American Fords like the Mustang, the Taurus, the Crown Victoria and the Mazda-based Escort. There are very clear differences philosophies between them.

I'm sure that many members associate (or would like to associate) our car with European Fords instead of Mercurys. Nothing personal but I don't even know what a Mercury is supposed to be. To me its just an unashamed rebadged, restyled and mass-produced Ford masquerading as a unique (even as a special) car. At least for the last 25 yrs that it what it is. Mercury's association with the Ford brand is not like Seat's association with VW for example. Even though Seat models may resemble VW somewhat, they are unmistakenly Mediterranean and they have the flair and unabashed sportiness that you do not find in German cars and especially VWs. Not only that, but they also have unique drivetrain options that are not available on VWs. To a lesser extent, you can also say the same thing about the relationship between GM's Chevrolet and Pontiac brands. In contrast, for the last three decades, Mercurys have been exactly the same as their Ford counterparts save for things like a different grill, different lights, or some options. That's not enough.

Like I said, I'm not going to swap emblems but why should I get upset if somebody else does it? It is their car after all. More importantly, why should they accomodate my views when modifying their cars. 80% of the cosmetic stuff that I see people do here I don't like... but I don't care. Don't worry about what other people do to their Mercurys, take care of your own Mercurys as you see fit and enjoy them.

Very good points Fern..

My take on swapping emblems is a mixed feeling. I used to not like having a ford emblem on the Cougar. However I have come to a new liking of the euro cougar. I like the subtle differences they have from the US spec version. I'd love to get a set of euro tailights, and I just might follow up with changing the badges, but one thing that keeps me from actually following through with it is this...Nobody knows what a FORD Cougar is here! I'd rather not explain myself to strangers when I'm stopped at a traffic light and tell them the whole european history behind the car and that I'm ashamed of the Mercury name (would look like an ass, right?). You cannot go to the DMV and register this car as a FORD. My NY state registration on the windshild clearly says "1999 MERCU" on it.

MercRS: Not to drift off the subject, but I noticed you have a 71 Mercury Cyclone listed on your signature...We had a 70 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler, 429 cobra jet. That car is Awesome!!! Can you post a picture? Ours met a sad demise...my husband (boyfriend at the time) drank too much and drove it through a house ad 110 mph. He survived, the car and house didn't. anyway long story, just got soooo excited when I saw that, noone even knows what a Cyclone is anymore.

just because you don't like it, doesn't mean that other people don't have to like it.

the main reason i got the ford grill is because i like how it matches the bottom grills. i didn't like how the upper grill was slits and the lower grills where a honey comb design. i didn't feel like spendin a few hundred on the wings west grill.

another thing is, i like ford products. they may do some stupid things, but, overall, i like them. my first car was an 84 ranger. i also had an 84 merc marquis.(not the grand, but the smaller one). i have a 23 model T in my garage right now. i've also had other makes, and i like other makes, but, i have to say that i'm a ford guy. so why not show that.

what is mercury anyway. it's the red headed step-child of ford. mercury is the low budget line of ford. lincoln is the higher line. i don't really know where i'm goin with this, but, i like it. and to me, that's all that counts. if you don't like it, then don't do it. it's simple as that.
