(ok first off i did a search on gear ratios and on gears and i found nothing that could help me understand it better)
The kid with Steeda short shifter in his Mondeo from my other post, was telling about how gear ratio works.
So for example let's say that your crank torque is 165 and you have a 3.34 1st gear and a 3.48 final drive. He said take the 164x3.34x2.48 to get your actual torque, does this mean wheel torque? Or something else?
Secondly I asked him what 3.34 actually meant and he said that for every 3.34 rpms the transmission is receiving it is putting out 1 Rpm, where does that go to the wheels would be my guess am I right? and then he goes if you have a higher gear ratio, more acceleration. Then I said that lower would be higher top speed and he said no, you would need a lot of torque to gain on this. So i thought that a this might be worthy of the Street Flight turbo kit, what do you think?
Now I have some more general questions.... what are the gear ratios in the mtx 75 for the v6 and what are they for the 4 cylinder since i have read that changing to the zetec final drive is worth it for high powered engines becuase it will help on wheel spin?
I also said that I had heard that hardening the gears made them stronger(as I had read Leo has done this) and he said well it's really bad to harden your gears if it's not done right, what did this mean?
Any help understanding this further is greatly appreciated,
Mike

Our final drive (v6 mtx) is 4.06.

The final drive on the zetec mtx is 3.88 (i could be wrong on this one).....

The higher the gear/final drive ratio the more accleration you get but the less top speed.... the lower the gear/final drive ratio to more top speed and less acceleration.....

btw: you don't harden the gears yourself, you get it done, and leo is not running stock gears and give them a hardening treatment, he is running completely new gears made from the ground up hardened....

Ok thanks however.....
Let's say that Our final Ratio was 3.58 this should increase our top speed, however, what I was told is that if you do not have a alot of torque this will not do anything for your top speed, am I correct?
Thanks

In theory, your top speed is dictated only by your gearing and your engine's max rpm. In practice, you could have a situation where you couldn't reach your theoretical top speed because the drag on the car (aero, drivetrain, etc) becomes too great. I've never driven that fast in the Cougar, so I don't know if that would be a problem or not.

Gear hardening increases the gear's resistance to surface fatigue (pitting) and its overall load-carrying capability. Typically you heat a gear up to 1600F in a hardening process... not something to try at home. :)

Nah, no hardening of the gears at my house haha.... i was just wondering what it was...
I understand more and more now.... i love learning about cars! Greatest thing in the world haha.
Thanks, anyone else have an input?

With a high output V6 2.5 or ,in some cases a 3.0 conversion, the final drive ratio is changed to the Zetec (higher). On some track (road course) set ups people run a 4.50:1 final drive. The MTX is prone to stripping gear teeth in high perf set ups.The biggest issue is the diff, hence fitting a quaife or Torsen diff...for the main gear sets some race boxes have custom made gears with 'uprated material' or use the Quaife gearsets (very expensive!)...hope that helps. You can mail me if you like as I repair/rebuild etc quite a few MTX75's..regards TH secondline@ameritech.net
