Alright, got a question. I was driving my brothers 1990 beretta, and I got in a race with a 99 cougar. I kept with him to about 120MPH.(i live in northern wisconsin lots of wide open roads with no cops). and my power band ran out, after that the cougar smoked me, where does the govenor kick in on the cougar. Because of this I am thinking about getting a cougar afer getting back from basic training.

Thanks,
John

My understanding is that on a cougar with the sport package (includes 16" wheels with V rated Firestones) there is no governor per se. I believe there is a rev limiter which eventually tops the car out in the 140's (for us in Canada the high 220 to low 230's, just sounds faster :grin
for an ATX. I've only had mine for under a month now and it insn't quite past the break in stage where I can test this theory, but some of the more experianced members may be able to attest to this. As an added bonus the car handles as if it were on rails (0.84 g stock).

The only drawback I have found is that the ATX is very sluggish compared with the MTX or GM ATX's for that matter. So if you are in the market go with the MTX if you can.

What kind of Beretta do you have? My buddie had one, and another friend has a V6 Corsica, both are a LOT slower than my Cougar. Just from those two cars I would have to wonder why you were able to keep up with him at all.

I know that the Beretta is a base model, but I don't know what other versions there are.

I will answer both questions in one for the first in the begining he pulled way out I know the beretta is 132HP and the cougar is like 170HP. But I caught up with him, and we evened out to about 120 and then he was gone. I am going to go to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO for Military Police.

Well, I've had my 2000 ATX up to 140 mph with a little bit of juice left in it. I didn't go any faster cause the Firestone tires are only 149 speed rated, so I didn't feel like pressing my luck with them.

Thats with the 16" sport package. Everyone else I've heard says 143 is all your gonna squeeze out of it...

As far as a govenor, I haven't heard anyone really say there is one, maybe some of the newer 2001 ones do, but none of the 1999-2000 ones I've saw have one...

Not that I do it that often, a old Escort came up on me acting like he was going to pass me, and I took off. It was a long straight stretch of road, I knew there would be no cops. I got up to 109 and it felt like there was PLENTY left! I have 15's and was wondering what would have happened if I did hit the 115 limit?

My Contour used to have the limit of 110.. it felt like I had AMPLE left.. I would be getting up there, hit 110 and BOOOWWWWWW.. dropped to like 80.. that was the first time.. the next couple times, I just slightly let off the gas when it hit the limiter, and I was able to keep it over 100..

Been to 115 in the I4 15" coug. The rev limiter will definetly get your attention , the engine kind of cuts off and on bouncing off the "celing" until you allow it to Idle down a little.I also met Mr.R/L when I was going against a Prelude.I tried to wind up second b4 the shift to third and there he was. raaaah raaah raaah. needless to say I lost. to a Girlie Girl too. Oh well, live and learn.

15" tire equipped cougar is speed limted to 115 mph according to the tire rating.

16" tire equipped cougar is rev limted to 143 mph alghough it can go faster downhill with back draft because there is no speed governor.
