Hi All,

I've searched a bit through the forums but can't find any info on V8 or Rear Wheel Drive conversion. I did find some of Goumba's AWD posts.

Has anyone ever put a V8 in a NE Cougar? I see Kugel makes kits for the Focus. How similar would this type of project be in a Cougar? The story is I have recently re-built a 5.0HO and I have picked up a 2000 Cougar that is sitting in the yard.

If anyone has any links or info it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

That is the only one I know of.

There's a picture of the engine bay on the forums somewhere. I'll find it later if someone else doesn't post it.

Nobody has done it on the forums. I'd say research the focus kit because you may be able to use most of their components. Hopefully you can weld and fabricate the other custom parts you will need. If you do start doing it make sure you post a build thread with pictures. You'll get input from others which will help you along the way. Eventually I'd like to pick up another Cougar to swap a rwd v8 into.

Here is a cougar drag car although it isn't really going to help you out with your build: http://www.mustang50magazine.com/techarticles/m5lp_0906_mercury_cougar_cobra_hybrid/index.html

Ummm... you actually can't use much of the Kugel kit ... you can use some ideas from it and a few parts though. It has been talked about before, and I have talked to Kugel about it. Most of the parts won't fit as they were made to bolt onto stock location on the focus ... Also the engine mounts differently, it mounts like most, to rails on the sub frame, where as ours hangs ... no rails to bolt their custom engine cradle to.

The focus is a little easier than the cougar anyways ... even ford racing did a RWD V8 Focus link

search fro some of the AWD threads, and baway cougar ... there is some more info, and good ideas, but no one has done it yet.

Mount/weld some adapter plates to the subframe that will allow the engine cradle to bolt up and cut the rear section of the subframe out. It would make sense that nothing would bolt directly up. I was assuming you could modify some parts to work and those that wouldn't work would need to be custom.

Thanks for the feedback. Am I correct in thinking that the NE Cougar shares the same platform as the Contour/Mondeo? If so, perhaps I can look for some ideas on conversions done on those models.

I have all of the 1992 Mustang where I got the engine out of. The Mustang body is beyond repairing though. My first thought was to take the drive-train out and work it into an Escort ZX2 (which I know has been done). Now the Cougar popped up for cheap and it looks 500% cooler than the Escort.

I think I will give it a go. I have a welder and an engineering degree. That qualifies me to be just dangerous enough do something silly like this.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Since the Focus uses a K-member subframe, it's MUCH easier to do that stuff with.

The Contour/Cougar uses a totally different arrangement that would require a TON of fabrication, cutting, welding, and general mayhem.

We have all done the same mods. No one has done a RWD set up on the Contour forums either. Gumba is the only one, so far, who has gone this far with a AWD set up...and he is still working on it so we don't know how well it works. And like everyone has said, you need to custom make most parts.

Thanks guys,

My concern was more on distance from the firewall to the radiator cross member. I measured up my Lincoln LSC and estimate I need 82cm (32") to fit the 5.0 between the firewall and the rad. I will have to decide if the V6's rad will do the cooling job or if I need to push the front of the engine bay ahead or relocate the V8 rad. In the V8 Foci the engine is situated quite far back and tunnelled.

There is lots of room between the strut towers, so at least I will be able to change the spark plugs.

I have the Cougar in the garage now and will be poised to yank the Duratec and transaxle on the weekend. I need to take some video footage of the engine starting, running, odo reading, and tailpipe before I pull it. It has 195,000 km (121,000 miles) on it, but someone may want to buy it. At least I can show them it was running before all hell broke loose.

Of course I'm going to need some advice and inspiration. I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Excuse my metric as I am Canadian eh?

:)

The Focus kit doesn't work. At all. There is no room for the transmission in the Cougar/Contour because of the design of the engine bay. The firewall does not allow the room for a V8 PLUS a tranny. The Focus engine bay DOES.

Actually, its a pretty straight forward swap. you just unbolt everything from the body shell and custom fabricate replacements.
