i think a bunch of us from this board should get together and contact a company about producing a turbo for our cougars. everyone has talked about it, and since there are so many neco members, if some of us request a company to make one im sure they will manufacture it. what is a good company? is anyone else interested in this?

Hell yeah, I've been thinking about swapping motors, but hell if there's a turbo in production for us there's endless possibilities for power. Like 550hp Cats, that's what we need. I'm in!!!!!!!!! IF we can get like a few dozen people that are serious about buying, I guarantee they'll make one, because if they already have that many lined up that will pay for the creation of the thing right off and after that it's all profit for them after like 20 units at like $2,500 to $3,500. THat's way cheaper than swapping motors and suping it up, especially the swap i want to do which probably wouldn't be compatible with our computer system.

If you guy's are serious about that and we could get a dozen people to put down money there is a company in Maryland that will design a turbo kit for the Cougar

I have an ATX V6 also & would love a turbo in it, but is there actually space for it? If I remember correctly....the supercharger isn't made for our ATX cause it wont fit. Correct me if I'm wrong

Duttweiler performance already built a 2.5 duratec v6 turbo and stuffed it in a focus wagon.. the motor made 450 hp on the engine dyno. I believe it was in HCI magazine in jan or feb. I have the article at home. You are talking major work though.. much more than $2500 in that motor

I get the feeling most of you have no idea what you'd be getting into with a turbo, or Sc at that. I researched for 2 yrs before Putting a SC on my 1995 Probe GT ATX...To all you atx people...say good bye to your trannies after 5 min. of driving at even 5psi making about 200hp...YOU NEED TO UPGRADE THAT ATX. I had a Level Ten Torque converter, and recalibrated valvebody, and a large tranny cooler, plus tranny flushes every 5000-7500 miles. That ATX will not handle the power sorry. To the MTX people, some tranny work is in sotre for you guys, but nothing spectacular, unless you plan to run a lot of boost, making alot of TQ which will eat the tranny alive. There's a lot that goes into this. Don't just think anyone could do this, cause they can't. You cannot cut ends, you need every part, and don't be cheap. If you don't have the time and money, it's not worth it. If you can't tune a car, if you have no mechanic ability in case something goes wrong, then you will be screwed. Engine fires are now extremely possible, and will you know what to do? Will you have the money to replace the tranny and/or engine if it blows? There's a lot to look into. I may have done a lot of research, but there's still a lot I don't know. Please, do some research. I don't want to see any of you guys lose alot of money, or possibly your lives if something goes wrong. Yes I have actually watched an aftermarket turboed car explode...completely. The hear got so intense, it actually melted the pistons and rods...well the ones stuck in the block. The others were all over the track. NO KNOWLEDGE = NO CAR...

Besides that...there is a place in washington state that will do a custom kit too, I will find out the addy, and pass it along. I would be interested in a turbo kit too, if the price is right.

pgtatx, while everything you mentioned regarding an ATX is true in general, my understanding is the Cougar ATX is based on the ATX from the Tarus line (I think that's one of the reasons it's so f'in big) and in the heavy ol'Tarus it is capable of dealing with 220 HP......so with our lighter, smaller Cats we sould have some room for HP improvments without running too great a risk....

The cougar ATX is different from the larger ATX in the taurus...and actually your ATX is based on my old ATX in my probe. Not a bad tranny if you kept good care of it, but nothing powerful. Though my tranny was Japanese, it was actually american based, having the ford valvebody etc. I actually think you may have the same exact tranny as we did, and it theoritacally could handle 250hp...but I could guarantee it'd die after 200hp. YOU NEED TO UPGRADE it. I promise if yopu don't it'll die. Other than that, you will decrease drivetrain loss and make yourcar faster. Figure the MTX cougar does a 15.71/4 mile, and the ATX does a 16.7...and with a turbo at the same psi, making the same power, cuts off 1.5sec. The mtx will be at a sweet 14.2, and the ATX will be at a meeger 15.2. Modding the ATX with a high stall torque converter, tranny cooler, and recalibrated valvebody, will not only lengthen the tranny's life, but also strengthen it so it can hand more hp, and cut at least .5-.7sec off your 1/4mi times...all by decreasing drivetrain loss, and firming and quickening the shifts. If you choose not to mod the atx, all your money will go down in flames and so will your tranny. I am speaking from total personal experience (though not on my car) and a lot of research, even up close and personal time with Level Ten ATX specialists, probably the #1 Auto tranny upgrade company in the world.

....hmmmmm...that's pretty much the opposite of everything I've been able to find on the Cougar trans...I've heard one of the reasons for the lack of parts for the CD4E is it's a new-ish design and the only sporty car that uses it is the Cougar (the other are the Contour/Mystique/Protege)......tiiime for more research ;)

The CD4E was used in the 4cyl probes...sorry but I have a 4EAT, much strongr than its cousin the CD4E. And I believe you have something very close to it. It was more of a question, on what your tranny was. But I guarantee you again...if you turbo on a stock ATX you will rip it apart. You're trying to diss me, and all I want to do is help.
