Speed Governor

I just purchased a 99' 2.5L (in a very ugly color I have no idea what its called) without the sport package and I am wondering where, how and if I can remove the speed governor in the car? Is this electronic or a complicated gearing system, or so easy it is a joke? I got this car as a project and I would like to "Sportify" it and want to start removing the items that make it a regular Coog.

What color is it? The only way that you can change any of that is in the ECU. Its been discussed a lot here if you search for it. IIRC they are speed limited somewhere in the 130's. It takes a lot to get the car to that point, so youll probably never even need to worry about it

No clue what color this is, looked at the reference color forum and couldn't match it, not five years of owning a cougar and I already have two, what has this car done to me...

I will try and look for the ECU in my manual, eventually she will have a new engine which will hopefully get her over that 130-150 mark.

Looks like Ash Gold. Paint code is on the tag in your door jamb.
There's nothing really benefitial on these cars above 120, which is probably where your fuel cuts out based on those 15" wheels.

Get lighter wheels, better tires and upgrade to 270-300mm brakes first.
If I buy another Cougar some day, I wouldn't mind finding a nice base model...The trouble of swapping brakes would be well worth not having a sun roof.

I'm quite glad it doesn't have a leaking and broke sun roof, the rear drums and 15" are going soon, failed inspection, for some misc lights and battery holder but otherwise a definitive steal.

I'm pretty sure the sunroof was an add-on option no matter what version you were buying. If you were ordering one of these, it was more like, what engine do you want? Do you want a stick or automatic? Do you want the sport package (which may have only been available with the V6)? Do you want a sunroof? And so on. For example, I have a V6 with the sport package that has everything but the sunroof and antilock brakes. Here's a scan of my window sticker which was damaged in the heat when I left in the car, but it's clear enough to see what I mean. (I always forget the Cougar has tilt steering. I don't think I've ever adjusted it.)

At least, that's how it was in '99. Maybe it changed in the later model years. I already had mine by then. ;)

We've had sunroofs in our other cars...and I gotta say, I rarely use them. I'm not sold on the value of having one. If the sun's at a bad angle, it just adds glare, too. I'm glad I don't have the potential issues in the Cougar or our truck.

Yeah, at least in '01 there was the V6 Sport Package, the Convenience Package, sunroof was its own option, not sure if ABS or T/C was part of a package or its own option, and leather seats were separate as well, I think. Should have the sticker somewhere...

ATX separate
16" wheels separate

V-6 Sport Group - fog lamps, wing, leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, light group, auxiliary warning system, illuminated driver mirror
V-6 Convenience - speed control, rear washer/wiper, remote keyless entry, illuminated entry

ABS separate
tilt/slide sunroof separate
power drivers seat separate
cdx6 radio w/ 6 cd changer separate
leather sport buckets separate

Unlike Skater's window sticker, mine does not call out the 2.5L V6 separately on the right hand side, only at the top.

The only sunroof-free cars I've ever seen also had drum brakes so I suppose I made an assumption, but I'll bet the numbers are small.

Here is our 17,400 mile 2001 Cougar with the sport package we bought new for my wife's 50th birthday in April of 2001. The only option it does not have is the leather interior. The sport package came with drivers power seat, V-6 engine, 4 wheel disc brakes, 16" wheels, rear deck spoiler, rear window wiper and the car has the the optional sun roof which still works without any issues. I had it out this morning and the Cougar drives like it just came off of the show room floor. The BFGoodrich g-Force Comp-2 235/50-17 W speed rated tires that are on it now changed the entire handling dynamics on the car so much that I can only define the handling now to that of a slot car. The picture I have attached is two years old with the orginal tires still on it. The front license plate & bracket have been removed since then then also. The license plate bracket mounting holes have silver frost bumper plugs in them that purchased from: BumperPlugs.com
BumperPlugs.com matched the color perfectly and I have used them in my Focus ST and Expedition also.

Correction: The car came with 17" wheels not 16" wheels.

Wow! It looks absolutely immaculate.

My '00 has the sport, convenience, and sound & fun packages ('00 Special Edition), but no sunroof.
