Hello everybody !

the HVAC climate control panel of my Cougar does not works (is the LCD european style, see picture below).

The last weeks, the HVAC control panel worked perfectly in the mornings (cold exterior temperature), but in the afternoons after several hours under the sun, the HVAC control panel does not worked.

Finally this week, the HVAC control panel does not works anymore.

When I turn the knobs and press the buttons, it does nothing:
  • the LCD screen show nothing.
  • the illumination of the LCD screen is always off (even if I turn on the headlights).
  • the blower does nothing.
  • the AC clutch compressor not activates.

I have checked (including a wiggle test) all the fuses of the two fusebox (specially the fuses number 23, 34 and 37 related to heater blower and AC system) and is all Ok.

I have checked also the blue color relay R3 (related to AC) and replaced it with a new one. The relay works ok (activates when I turn on ignition switch)

I have do a wiggle test of the rear connectors and cables of the HVAC control panel, but still not works.

Please, has anyone had the same problem?
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad English.

My car is a 1998 Ford Cougar 2.5 manual transmission.
This is my HVAC control panel:

SOLVED !!!

I found the problem doing a wiggle test to the cables under the dashboard.

The problem was a cable connector in the Fuse box under the steering wheel.

The connector have the reference C371 in the Ford TIS wiring diagram.

In the following pictures you can see a pin open and the connector melted.

This have cuased poor electrical contact and finally the pin open and no power to the HVAC Climate control panel.

As I have read in other forums, this is common fault in the Cougar and the Contour (Mondeo), and most cars have this connector melted.
You can read about this same problem in this Contour forum:
https://www.contour.org/forums/thre...use-box-melting-from-the-heater-blower.53810/

Luckly this connector is still available new.

I bought a new connector, replaced and the Climate control works again.

I also have added grease for electrical contacts to the pins (Liqui Moly 3140).
Battery Clamp Grease

You can find the connector searching the following words in eBay or Aliexpress:

Check the european ford cougar forum. That control panel wasn't ever an option here and the cougar doesnt even exist for the 1998 model year here.

I think the UK forum has some ownership issues that have made joining difficult, this forum is probably the best maintained right now.
Most of us are in North America so have little or no experience with that panel.

It honestly sounds like an electronics failure though. You made need to replace the panel. You might try opening it up to look for loose or broken connections, but I would be surprised if you found it.

I cant tell if the numbers still show up and just dont illuminate. If thats the case could there be a bulb for the LCD that burnt out like with the LCD screens in the gauges?

The LCD Display doesn't illuminate until its turned on thats normal.
If it doesn't turn on when you use the right dial its either the Unit that has died or some problem with the power being supplied to it.
Best way to test is taking the unit out and using a different one if you are able to do that.
If it still doesn't work... well its either some fuse or wiring problem. Haven't heard of them dying at all so I can't really suggest anything other than standard diagnosis procedures.

My car is a 1998 Ford Cougar 2.5 manual transmission.
This is my HVAC control panel:

your options as follows.
1. You may need to replace it as the lcd sometimes fail.
2. Pull unit out and unplug and re plug it back in. Might be a loose or corroded connection.
3. The light bulb might be out, shine a flash light into it to see if you can see the digital read out. If not the lcd is shot and refer to 1.
4. Check your wiring as some connectors might have come loose or corroded or broke. Check the fuse panel under the dash. LHD is under the Left side of the dash. Not sure on the RHD vehicles.
Good luck.
