when you get in just hold the release button down for about 5 seconds....the light may still be on but the warning wont go off....eventually the light turns off too
I know you said apart from the obvious answer, by why not use your seat belt. You'll be glad you did if you are in an accident. If its a short parking lot trip I can understand, but then the alarm shouldn't go off that soon.
Remember that a great majority of fatal accidents (I forgot which safety report this was from) happen within 2 miles from home. :)
That is because the majority of average drivers time is spent, driving within 2 miles from the home. It is a padded stat.
thats hella scary... but no doubt true.

the front end accident i had that totaled my car and the other guys car happend just about 2miles away from my house.
i wasnt advocating not using a seatbelt....i just wanted to answer the guy's question...
the belt saved my life once, i make everyone in my car wear one.

i know it sounds grandma-ish.....sorry
:(So basically no one knows how to permanetly turn off that noise. I always wear a seatbelt, but not when reversing out of the garage to then get out of the car and close the garage door. I just want to turn it off!!!!!
just push the release button down and let it go...that way it wont go nuts when you are backing out...i do it all the time when im pulling out of the parking lot to my building...

its not permanent, but it works.
Dude I just ran my seat belt behind the damn seat it was pissing me off. But when I drive fast I always wear my belt. *he he* sometimes I imagine it's a racing harness and I'm ........ I'll be quiet now.
Here are the steps to disable the Belt Minder: (found on pgs 108-109 of the 2000 Manual)

1) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (DO NOT START THE ENGINE)
2) Wait until the Safety belt warning light turns off (approx 1 minute)

Steps 3-5 must be completed within 60 seconds or the procedure will have to be repeated

3) Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt 3 times, ending with the saftey belt unbuckeled. This can be done before or during Belt Minder warning activation.
4) Turn on the headlamps, turn off the headlamps
5) Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt 3 times, ending with the safety belt unbucked.

After step 5, the Saftey belt warning light will be turned on for 3 seconds

6) Within seven seconds of the Safety belt warning light turning off, buckle then unbuckle the saftey belt.

This will enabled Belt Minder if it is currently disabled, or disable Belt Minder if it is currently enabled.

7) Confirmation of enabling Belt Minder is provided by flashing the Saftey belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds, followed by 3 seconds with the Saftey belt light off, then followed by flashing the Safety belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds again.

8) Confirmation of disableing Belt Minder is provided by flashing the Safety belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds.

9) After receiving confirmation, the deactivation/activation procedure is complete

I've tried it 5 times now with no success. It falls down at the end of step 5. The belt warning light fails to come on for 3 secs! Gutted.:(

heh. i've never been in an accident *knock on wood* but i was coming home in my cougar and EXACTLY 1 mile down the road from my house, this b**** didn't look both ways pulling out of a restaurant parking lot. she looked to her right, which, there was a car coming and she waited for them before trying to turn left, so i kept going straight cuz i figured she was waiting for both sides of traffic. i was on her left. once the car passed her, i was just about to pass her when she pulls out in front of me, i SLAMMED those brakes as hard as they would go and made a hard left to avoid hitting her while i was blaring my horn.. i was INCHES from her face (she had a little bitty car).. i stopped in the middle of the street just shaking and pulled into a parking lot across the restaurant and just sat there a good 5 minutes.. the lady just backs up into the restaurant and sits there.. her passenger was freaking out on her.. i had a few tears from being overwhelmed in shock. it was a 35 mph rd, which doesnt seem like a lot, but when ur trying to stop while going about 40mph that close to someone..

sorry, got a lil off topic.. :p

my seatbelt alarm actually isn't that annoying.. i could record it next time i drive down my driveway without my seatbelt so you can hear it.. maybe the previous owner did something with it, but its a slower chime..
