I know I am a little late to the party, but I have heard that you can turn PATS off with a scan tool? I have two keys that work as of right now with the Cougar I just bought, but I hate for my son to be stranded because of either key failure or receiver failure with a 21 year old car. Seems like removing a point of failure would help.

No, you cant turn PATS off.
You will see some references to "Bypassing PATS" here and there...what that really means is taking the chip out of your key and permanently mounting it in your steeering column so it never gets lost.

Ok, I thought I had read that there were certain scan tools that could turn it off. I used to do car alarm and remote start installs about the time this car was new, so I don't have any issues installing an immobilizer that doesn't need a key to bypass it. Just thought I would save myself time and trouble of having to dig through the wiring to do it. The modules are like $10 now, so it's not an expensive work around. ;)
