Performance Issues

Car: 2000 MTX 2.5 L V6. Engine Mods: SRI. Weekend Car. Barely driven, babied to the max,

ive put 15000 kms on the car in over a year, and for the last 2000 its been running extremely sluggish,
at high rpm's 4500+ i barely even gain any speed at all. Car feels very weak

On days with its +30'c or higher outside, my engine begins to studder and has stalled while idling with the clutch in or just rolling down the street to a light. After turning the car off for a few minutes and turning it back on it works fine for about 10 more minutes. On these kind of days, i have barely any acceleration in any of my gears, the rpm climbs but the car barely moves. Has only happened twice.

fuel filter has been done. Engine performing very sloppily when below a quarter tank of gas.

If anyone has any suggestions or reasoning for any of these issues, it would be greatly appreciated if you help me out here.

Thanks.

fuel pump?! it's a good possibility, or the clutch
what are good signs of fuel pump failure?
the clutch isnt done yet... its getting there, the guy that owned it previously must have driven like a jackass lol
I should start to notice clutch failure in the 5th gear?
Dont forget the Secondaries!

Check your IMRC (intake manifold runner control) box!!! This is the #1 cause of HP loss in a cougar. 30hp to be exact.

search for IMRC fix or Secondaries.

With the secondaries not opening after 3800 rpms you will have very little power...even my 14 second cougar is crippled without them! I could not out accelerate a freaking blazer! Of course the more mods you have the more HP your secondaries being stuck closed will rob you!
For your clucth the best test is this

start in 1st, shift to 2nd at 10, 3rd at 15, and finally 4th at 20 and at the same time floor it. If rpms surge high while in gear (which it shouldnt because you have no power in 4th at 20.) then your clutch isnt holding.
Why would not having secondaries stall while at idle though? not saying his secondaries are fine but it sounds like something more or else than that. Id say more but DanG will just tell me im wrong :)

just a guess but i think something is messing up the A/F mix....
I beleive the stalling was due to fuel, and thats going to be solved by removing the fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump or something more drastic (i hope not)

ness1216: The Clutch fix, were you giving me directions in Kmph or Mph? big diff lol im in canada btw.

Since GMK told me to check the secondaries... welll i guess i'll do it. What causes them to break or loose thier timng? do they need to be re-greased? or re-tuned?
Stalling at idle can be caused by an IACV stuck closed.

SOunds to me like you have a dead or dying IMRC, dead or dying IACV, and a dead or dying fuel pump.
Moraki: WTF? I have that much of an "ogre mod" reputation??? :(

Sounds like you guys have hit the bases- IMRC for power loss up top, clutch just in case, and IACV sounds to be the idle culprit.

Naa not that... but im just guessing here based on general info ... if i threw out some particulars, id probably be wrong :)
Just doesnt sound like secondaries to me....
Secondaries stuck open will give you a nasty cold idle as well. Not so bad when warm. But then if they WERE stuck open, you wouldn't have that crappy top end.
Granted its never a bad idea to clean out your LIM and free up the secondaries...well unless you dont know what your doing and do it wrong ....

clean out the UIM while your at it... blah blah just recondition the whole intake/ fuel system

mph
no problems with the clutch, i have yet to check the imrc, i hope to do it tommorow before work or after work :S
What is the iacv? what does it do and how do i service it?
IACV is good, not having any of the symptoms, i wish i could swap my engine for a turbo diesel from a vw, but i think that would be way too much money, those engines are so well built, no ford parts..
Yeah, that really sounds like an IMRC issue. As soon as you said "no power above 4500 rpms", I immediatly said out loud "IMRC isn't opening."

Check out the how-to section for specifics on fixing the IMRC.
Fixing er right now.
