yeah, unless you want the paint to look like ass. It's a slick finish and the paint just won't stick (or it will, but chip off easily). Fully sand the inserts, then primer, then sand....repeat this until it feels super smooth to you - then wash it with soap & water, let it dry all the way, then paint in really really light coats (can't stress that enough).

OJE-- what kind of paint did you use? There is a Krylon fusion paint that is supposed to stick with no sanding. I tried it, but it went on like NiteShades, except lighter. It would have taken 20 coats before it looked black. I gave up, sanded it all down and used traditional black spray paint.

I really couldnt tell ya. It was almost, if not over a year ago so i dont even remember what kind it was. I didnt sand my tails when i nightshaded them and they came out fine as well.
