Oil change

Tried changing the oil last night on my 99 Cougar but couldn't get the damn drain plug off!! Wasn't able to get a ratchet in there because the exhaust was in the way and I didn't have a 5/16 wrench to stick up there.
Is there anything specific to the Cougar I should know before I go further? Is there a plastic washer that needs to be replaced on the drain plug or anything like that?
