Been thinking about getting the OBD II software or Palm or reader or whatever. I've been reading some about them and it seems like you can spend a whole bunch of money on OBD II. I don't have a laptop or a Palm, I think I want something that can pull the codes and a reference to tell what the codes mean so I can fix it. What do most home repair types use?

I bought an Auto-Xray scanner kit for about 480.00. It does OBD I and II, so it covers everything from 84 and up except imports before 1996. Also does some limited real time data from OBD II vehicles. You can get the Auto X-ray without the OBD I for less. Search google for Auto X-Ray and get retailers from their site. Shop around because prices vary.

You can get just OBD II code readers for significantly less. I won't comment on which is best because I don't know.

One last thought, if you have Autozone stores where you are, they are advertising free Code diagnosis. If you only want to pull codes, they will do if for you.
