Hi, everyone. I've been following this website since I got my first Cougar (2002) in 2007. I'm on my third. Never had a need to post because all three have been problem free. I hope I can get a simple answer to this. I currently have a 2001Zn with 126+ miles. Runs great, but the speedometer stopped working. Since the bright yellow is very noticeable, I gotta get it fixed before I get nailed by a trooper. My mechanic thought it was the connection to the tranny ( manual), but the transmission guy says it's in the computer. Anybody have this issue? I really hope this isn't something that has to go to a dealer. The Ford dealer just had my husband's Flex for 5 weeks for computer issues. They don't work too fast. Can it even be fixed? I know some parts are impossible to get. Worst case scenario I'll have to use the speedometer app on my phone.
Thanks for any help.

Its a very simple circuit, and not that hard to access.
What engine and transmission do you have?
Assuming you have a V6 auto, here's the circuit.

Is anything else on the cluster or anything else on the car out? Sometimes things are related that you don't realize.

Here's the circuit feeding the cluster

There's a troubleshooting chart starting on page 574 of the PDF here

I had an issue with the wiring on my speed sensor; the connection just got brittle and started to have connectivity problems. A new sensor solved all my issues.

Another possible issue is the speed gear inside the transmission that the sensor engages with - hopefully that's not the problem, as I think the trans has to be removed and opened up to access that gear, and they are impossible to find now.

I would use a GPS app on my phone in the meantime! Good luck.

Thanks for the input. No, the car's a manual and nothing else is out.
