My friend just bought an 1999 Explorer (from a local Ford dealer) when he bought the car he didn't notice but I did today that the numbers on the odometer are uneven, way off. (meaning not in a strait line) granted i know that its no supose to be in a perfect strait line but i have never seen any that were this way off before....crooked. Any other ways (hard evidence) to produce it was tampered with? please dont say car fax, already looked said nothing (Warning they are always wrong... but thats another story behind my old Coug) What we were thinking of doing is taking it to another local Ford dealership and say that we think the odometer has been rolled back and we bought it from a private seller out of state (which would be a lie but to see if they would tell us the truth, and they wouldnt try to cover up for the other dealership) Also keep in mind that this isnt the most credible dealership (infact they are known for being crappy service and sales) and why he bought his Explorer there i will never know. But thanks in advance for your replies.

he stated the numbers werent straight, so it is pretty obvious he is talking about an Anolog display.

My opinion is that I have seen a lot of cars whose mileage displays get VERY crooked. Probably not tampered with, but I am not saying it isnt possible. I think the idea of asking another dealership is pretty good. You could also have a private mechanic do a detailed diagnostic on the engine and get a good idea of what the mileage on the engine might be.

Actually, digital displays arent that hard to stop. A friend of mine can easily attach a push botton switch to allow you to turn it on or off. If its off however, you wont have a speedometer either.

Not like half of us use a spedometer anyways.

haha...just remembered in Ferris Bueller's Day off when they try to run the Ferarri in reverse to get the miles off...:banghead:

as for the odometer, that digital disconnect sounds cool, and makes sense that the speedometer would go out too...just like analog if you disconnect the wire.
