This isnt quite a "problem", just an observation today that worries me. I took off my UIM to clean it today and noticed it was still fairly decent (was cleaned before cougarfest I think). The only thing that concerned me was that there seemed to be an unussually high amount of oil (wet, not caked on so much) inside the UIM and LIM and all over the upper to lower gasket. It wasnt flooded, just more wet than normal. Also, I noticed a very heavy amount of carbon buildup (I think that's what the black sooty crap is) on my exhaust tip. It builds up but I wash regularly and it was way too much for just 2 days worth. It seems that I am getting a larger than normal amount of crud/ oil flowing through my engine. Does this make sense to anyone and does anyone have an idea of what would cause this and how to cure it? I plan to change the plugs soon anyway (unrelated I think) but my motor has 90K+ on it and Ive never changed the EGR or any of that stuff...pcv, etc. Should I? Could a worn EGR be dumping excess crap into my intake? Also, is this harmful to the engine or O2 sensors? I want to replace the sensors soon but for the $$$ involved in that it will take some saving. Thanks.

PVC change may do you a world of good. My Saturn used to smoke like a chimney under hard acceleration, but after a PVC change, it's pretty much clean. Just get a good one - not a Fram POS...

PCV (positive crankcase ventilation)??? This what you mean? And should I just go with the ford part from a dealer or is there an aftermarket option??

People have been saying that an air/oil seperator is a good idea. Others have doubted that it works. A search would probably be a good idea.

Not sure on the carbon buildup issue. Wouldn't think it was oil in the cylinder, but maybe?

 I just called Mr. Froge on that same thing like 2 weeks ago. Now I do it myself!

Yes, that IS what I mean. And most likely the Ford unit would be the best. Cheap, easy measure, which MAY fix that problem.

Ok thanks. I looked it up and the part is less than $10 so prolly get one soon. I read the threads a while back about all the talk of a stand alone filter for the crank case vent...not something I wanna mess with but thanks.

I think I'll replace the PCV and EGR...they are prolly both due for some regular maintenance since Ive got 91K now. Thanks and see ya in Columbus in a couple weeks Bennett :) .

worst case scenario, valve cover gaskets, that carbon buildup is usually associated with oil being leaked in to emissions exiting the head, check for leaks along the valley that could be why your lim has oil residue?
