Something went on my Cougar this weekend. It stalls-out and will not idle. It drives, but runs rough and has lost power. The check engine light has come on too. Haven't checked the codes. Any ideas what's wrong?

idle air control valve? Mine had similar symptoms once but it was b/c my air filter fell off...or rather, fell apart. (cheap filter on SCA intake, it fell apart and left the base clamped to the pipe. car did not like an open intake)

Could be IACV, or the DPFE, check that your throttle plate is clean, vacuum leaks....

Meaning: get those codes scanned :biggrin:

DPFE would only cause a CEL, not stalling. Sounds like the IACV or the Fuel Pump since it runs rough after it doesn't stall ... IACV would ONLY effect idle (throttle plate closed). I would check fuel pressure at the rail during idle and go from there.

Trevor -- when my DPFE failed, I would stall when it was cold out - replacement immediately took care of the problem, though.

Wierd ... when my DPFE failed, I merely got a CEL ... car ran just fine.
