Hm...there used to be an excellent how-to with pics somewhere, I think it was the newcougar.org web site, but I just checked and it seems to be gone now.

Basically, you will need to remove the inside door panel in order to the get to the bolts that hold the mirror to the door. You just unplug the wiring and unscrew the casing and it slips off pretty easily, then reverse the steps to put the new one on. Sorry, it was about a year ago that I performed this and I have forgotten the specifics :(

Okay, I just remembered that mirror removal/installation instructions are included on the Ford Service Manual CD I've got. I can't figure out how to save the (rather crude) diagrams, but here are the text instructions which should hopefully get you pointed in the right direction. There are basically 2 parts: 1) Removing the interior door trim, 2) Disconnecting the mirror wiring and casing....and then reversing these steps to put it back together.

Here's the instructions:

Power Door Mirror (433640)


Removal

1. Remove the door trim panel. <<<<<<<SEE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW>>>>>>>>

2. Remove the bezel.

Detach the three retaining clips.

3. Remove the door weatherstrip.

4. Detach the rubber surround.

Detach the insert from the window channel.

Lift the rubber surround to access the mirror fixings.

5. Disconnect the electrical connector.

6. Remove the exterior rear view mirror.

Remove the three retaining nuts.

Note:
Note the position of any gaskets.

Remove the mirror.


Installation

1. Note:
Make sure that any gaskets are correctly positioned.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Front Door Trim Panel (437050)


Removal

1. Remove the door pull handle screw.

Remove the screw cover.

Remove the screw.

2. Detach the door trim panel.

Remove the screw covers.

Remove the screws and detach the door trim panel.

3. Detach the remote door release cable.

4. Disconnect the remote door release cable.

5. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the door trim panel.


Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
