i had this problem a while ago and never fixed it because i didnt need to. but now that its winter its really annoying, how do i fix this problem. my heat/ac controls 1,2 and 3 dont work however 4 is full blast. so its pretty much all or nothing. i was told it was a resistor? i believe. if it is anyone know tha part number?

i couldnt find it. i was the one who started that thread. i did search. heater, resistor both brought up nothing that i made. i made it in june so i doubt it would be in there... thanks for your help though

Vehicle: 1999 Mercury Cougar
Defect Description:
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The rough surface of the heater blower resistor's stainless steel blades can damage the copper surface of the wiring harness connector. The damage could, over time, cause increased resistance in the connector and, due to subsequent terminal relaxation, result in an open circuit condition.

Consequence of Defect:
The open circuit could lead to electrical arcing that could melt the connector housing material creasing the potential for a fire.

Corrective Action:
Dealers will install a new heater blower resistor and a new wire jumper harness. Owner notification began August 29, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

This is an easy fix. It is the blower resistor, just as stated above. The first three settings on your heater use the resistor, while the last setting bypasses it, that's why it still works. Go to fordpartsonline.com and search it. I think it costs like $15.00 total. Then find the blower motor on the firewall (passenger side I believe).
