Headlight mod

I've got one of my headlights tore apart right now cause i'm about to finally install my Angel Eyes. I was looking at the light for a sec then thought of something. Does Tearing that half round peice of metal in the lowbeam light make a difference at all? Specifically to John and Aaron since i know you two have those taken out. I'm thinking about tearing them out since i'm going to have my headlights tore apart. Since i'm probably going to do it anyways what's the best way in removing these? I havent had a chance to look at them yet so do i just break them out or do i have to cut them?

I won't have the Angel Eyes installed totally tonight cause it's too dark outside to see what i'm doing. But i'm going to do most of the work tonight.

As I understand it the half circles only came on very early 99 models; the newer ones came with them due to the headlights melting the plastic around the beam...like the one at the mod meet...though I dont remember who's car it was. Sooooooooo, basically just dont take them out. ;)

Actually, that's not the half round peice i'm talking about. Besides, according to the Angel Eye how to on cougardb.com you have to remove those cowls anyways:

H. Installing angel eyes.

a. now that your headlights are apart, the part that said7 used to paint is the part you will use to install the angel eyes. First start by taking out the little cowl or hood, or what ever its called off. On the bright’s pod. It may have prongs that have been bent around to keep them in, or just simple tabs. I had both on my headlights (Ford engineering at its best.)
b. Now with your rotary tool take off the middle hole used to keep the cowl thing in out, be careful when doing this because if you use too much force you may damage the housing, remember, you just want to take out the top part of the hole so that it makes it easier to run the wire.
c. Now place the angel eye into the pod, make sure you put it in with the etched sides against the surface of the pods. To make it stay I used a combination of small dabs of superglue and a small pin melted slightly through one of the holes to the ring, that was used by the existing tabs from the cowl. Once the pin was melted in I bent the pin around tightly and it didn’t let the angel eye to move, nor was it able to be seen.
The piece of metal i'm talking about is that half round plate metal that's behind the low beam clear projector peice.

Edit: It does concern me about having to remove that cowl for the angel eyes. So i asked about it. If anybody wants here is a link to my thread: clicky

Thanks
Brian

RE:Headlight mod

Erm...disregard everything i've said.

I completely forgot about that peice of plate metal before i put my headlights back together. And i got my Angel Eyes all hooked up and running. Looks sweet too! I've got some pics i'll post a little later. Oh, and you do have to keep that cowl in the headlights. They just fail to mention it in the how to. Good thing i asked in that other post of mine...

Edit to post pics. These pics are both of the wiring under the hood and of the Eyes completely lit up after i finished:

Man you are on of the most creative people I know. I loved your CD player cover thingy at CP meet. Now that lil circuit thingy is sweet. You should really ask around if people want those cuz that makes a clean and sweet setup.

Also those look great, hella bright and sweet looking. That ll really setoff your white car too. Good stuff!

yea so I installed my set of Angel eyes today. Thanks again brian. I'm well into the first one and find the same snag that brian did....so quick fix, but I put the resister on the LED's unlike brian leaving them awkward to deal with by the lense. For the 2nd one I though, hey I'll just put the resister farther back on the wire. So I finally get that one done and put my lights back together. Run out, hook them up, damn that looks nice, then I look at the other one. SMOKE.....I quick run and turn off the power, I knew exactly what I had done, no resister  so I ran about 13 volts through 2 3.7 volt led's....crap

Thanks everyone! It took me longer than i wanted to take to do it all. And the worst part was soldering the wires onto the pc board at the car. I had no way to do it outside. That pc board with the resistors soldered is found in any radioshack. And anybody that can solder, even if they suck at it, cause i do, can make it. I still have to go back and splice in a fuse so that i don't burn anything out in case of a short or if a solder joint breaks loose or something. Which can happen as i did break off a LED lead on a couple of the LEDs. I was able to fix both, but i'm still not sure if they'll stay. I could of just as easily put the resistors in the wires somewhere. But i wanted a clean looking setup. So i went this route. Though it doesn't look as clean on the other side of the box, lol.

Those look great John! Sucks that you forgot the resistor. Now you car has a lazy eye, lol. On Aaron's eyes i soldered in an 1 1/2" - 2" section of wire between the LED and resistor so i didn't have the akwardness of having the resistor right there. Definately worked out good.

Diane, you'll have yours next pretty soon. I'm going to make up another jig to drill the smaller rods so i don't have to put electrical tape on the ends or do the same thing i did with one of john's eyes. Don't worry, i was able to get three out of that rod so he's got an extra.

I'll have them finished before then. I just have to make that new jig and modify my bending one a bit so the size of the ring isn't so big. They just barely hit the lens of the headlight when you put them in. Especially with that cowl being there. I had to bend and modify my cowls a bit just so they sit better.

Hehe, you know what's funny. I just recieved like 3 or 4 pms today from people asking how much i would charge to make them a set. Angel Eye Inc. is now open for business

Though Diane's charge will be like a buck or two for the rod, and maybe a couple beers for my efforts, lol.

They really are amazing. You're gonna have yourself quite a business there. Really though, I can wait until Halloween to get them. And a few beers is the least I can do for you.
