God Hates My Transmission v2.0

Well...some may remember I had myself a little tranny problem about a year and 2 months ago. My tranny died, replaced a whole lot of nifty sounding parts, rebuilt it, blah blah blah......so she worked fine after they were dnoe, never a hint of a problem till just now....bringing me to today (enter dramatic music)

So im heading to my bank....roughly 1.5 miles from my house. Im about 100 yards from the bank and i hear a god aweful pop. Now nothing too strange happened, figured I hit an ice chunk or some form of woodland creature. Now, I pull into my bank parking lot and notice the "gear of death light" has appeared. I shut my car off cursing the bloody thing to hell and soon a i step out I notice I am now standing in a massive puddle of my tranny fluid.

I check under the car to see what the deal is and well...heres the deal. I have 2 huge puddles under my car. 1 is up by my driver side wheel(i assume its that release tube thingy) and 2nd puddle is back by my passenger rear wheel. dont know why, but i figured maybe car leaked as i made my turn into the spot.

Now, after doing my banking business....i turn the car on. "gear of death light" no longer appears. I try engaging the gears and its hesistant at best to engage anything. Reverse seemed to be the strongest but that gear left much to be desired.

So upon my list of questions for y'all lovely people. I'm going back later with my dad to check it out, what are some things I should look for? Anything I can replace/fix myself there to at least get it home? One thing i think needs to be mentioned is that I take my car in for regular oil changes at this dealership i bought the car (its free get off my back) and on the sheet they provide upon inspection they noted they filled my tranny fluid up some. Could they of put too much in it?

Now onto my dealership/warranty question. I know this may go by dealer to dealer, but is there some type of warranty they express with their work on rebuilds? The car was serviced less then 18k miles ago with the tranny rebuild. I suppose it's something i'd have to call and check about, but i was just wondering because they are a certified blue oval blah blah dealer, didnt know if they had any set type of work guarentee.

If I'm not mistaken Ford warranties any work for 12k or 12months which ever comes first as to the other question I don't have a clue.

i don't know if the 4-bangers are the same, but the clutch uses brake fluid to engage on the V6. This being the case, when you're low on brake fluid the clutch won't work properly. Maybe the rear puddle is a busted brake line, and it leaked enough fluid to where the clutch won't engage properly. That doesn't explain the puddle in the front of the car though, so maybe it's just wishful thinking.

if what he says is true that would put the first puddle in line with the master cylinder so that might be worth loking at .

Well....I went back a little while ago, little cold outside so it took me a bit to defrost and type :wiggle:

So I went with flashlight and such to investigate this here issue. All the brake lines etc...are fine. Everything is lovely in that department.

I checked the tranny level.....only the fear of my upcoming bill for this problem was as empty as that dipstick showed. So I took me a little stroll to my local Acme (supermarket) and picked up some Tranny Fluid. I then put 1 QT into it and then turned the car on and let it idle for a few moments. Everything was groovy so far. Nothing leaking, spitting, etc...

I put her into reverse....immediately engaged and went into reverse. Very happy. Then put her into Drive, and well...lets just say it pretty much just spewed out everything bit of tranny fluid i put in. I mean not leaked, but hurled violently out.

So what would that tell ya'll. Any ideas of how bad it is, anything I can tell then might be a cause etc...?

I can tell you once thing....theres going to be a very unhappy dealership tomorrow once Im done with them :evil: :thumbsup:

I wouldnt be surprised if there is a hole in the case with the way its spewwing out

Yeah, sounds like something broke off with such velocity that it blew through the case.

Its a 4 banger....no such thing as "such velocity" :rofl: :disgust:

He has one of the rare 4-banger ATX's, so there's no hydraulic clutch actuated using brake fluid, no slave cylinder, etc...

In any case, like I told you in IM, the 'gear of death' light is supposed to indicate overpressure in the transmission (Don't remember if it indicates anything else). There's a tube attached to the battery tray that's ventilation for the tranny.. maybe something blocked it and it blew, or a ton of tranny fluid spewed out.. not sure. Could be a million other things though and you need to identify where the fluid was released from.

Where is the fluid coming from? If it's from the drip tube on the valve body cover, it's your valve body which is destroyed from a "High Line Pressure Spike" (the "POP" that you heard). The dealer should replace it within an hour or so and give you a nice $400-$700 bill. Good Luck!!!

Well.....I had my car towed to the last honest mechanic in my town and heres the phone call I received this morning, "dude, your car is ****ed up"

He apprently said it looks like something sheered off and pretty much tore everything apart. Mentioned this is the type of damage ya seem when you hit something while driving, except that I didnt hit something. Go figure.

So hes gonna try to pick up parts to fix and rebuild, otherwise....new tranny entirely


Bout all I got to say about that right now....except im never owning a cd4e tranny again :thumbsdn:

Ok...last update I promise since the "damage" has finally been diagnosed :wiggle:


Talked to my mechanic today....said the problem with the tranny was the Servo and Servo Belt :shrug:


Reason its taking so long is the part is on back order due to high demand?? And they say its not a common problem and the dealership still says no warranty coverage even thought the Ford lady from Dearborn said I may have a case

Ok.....so i got my car back yesterday....I was doing some food prepping for dinner so I didnt really drive my car that much, just backfrmo the mechanic, a whopping 1/2 miles.

So i start my potato salad and realize I forgot the mayo, so I hope into my car and figure hmm...I need gas too, so instead of veering left at the light, I go straight.....and soon as I start gonig through the intersection....POP

Yup....same exactly thing happened to me once again that happened just over what...like 2 weeks? So at least now we can discuss things that may be the problem.

They replaced the servo(parts list = spring assembly, cover assembly, piston, and rg-tran) Obviously they fixed the sympton not the problem. Does anyone have any guesses given all the information we know now?? When I did have the car back and driving, she drove just fine, shiftnig was normal and all...just all of a sudden "pop"

I hate my car...now I gotta add my mechanic to my list of peolpe who hate my car

Whelp....talked to my mechanic who in turned talked to several transmission "specialists" and a Ford Mechanic hes buddies with. Here's the results they have found. Gives me moderate hope for the car, especially the "fix it for free part"

Apprently thespot on the transmission case where the servo is wasnt cut deep enough for to fully "latch" into place, so what happens is when there is pressure building up from the fluid flowing, the pump doesnt have a grip to stay in, so it "pops" out....apprently the sound I heard is similar to opening like a bottle of champagne, the pressure release make sthe noise.

Now...the solution. The Ford mechanic and transmission people have all seen this happen with the cd4e before and apprently all they need to do is drill into the case further, drill 3 holes around the opening and sort of anchor the servo into place, or use some JB Weld and reinsert the servo and allow to harden. Why my mechanic didnt get advice ahead of time....beyond me :thumbsdn:

I just like seeing my name posting so I update freqently....hopefully maybe someone wont have to go through this themselves or if they do, have some options open to them to discuss with the mechanic.
