Engine randomly surges from 2k to 3k RPM while driving.

Does it every 3 seconds or so.

Starting to be a daily thing. No cel. Engine also very rarely sometimes bucks, at low enough speeds it bogs so bad it feels like ive thrown it into park. Parking it and just idling, it stops completely.

99 2.5 ATX

Car has also been surging on "cold" starts when going from park to drive. Like a startled horse. Not often, but enough.

EDIT: Car seems to do it more, the closer to 1/4 tank I am.

Seems like a fuel issue more than fuel-air, I stalled on a hill recently coming home with less than a 1/4 tank, had the same surging above 2k until I was parked on level ground and it went away, the fuel pump doesn't seem to be able to get all the gas out of the bottom.
I was afraid it was the pump. Isnt there a tsb for these cars thats fuel related?
Whats all this "From 1999/05/25" and "to 2/99" on these fuel pump listings?
The early 99 cars had a return style fuel system. Around 5/99 it switched to a returnless style system and remained that way for the rest of the Cougar production. It’s not a solid cut-off date though, as far as I know. Verify which style you have looking under the throttle body to see how many fuel lines you have.

I never saw one for my 2000 but it was made after May, you could open the access panel beneath the seats and look at the actually number of your physical pump.

My build date is 2/99 and I have a return line from the rail.

After hours of searching here I'm pretty sure I can replace just my pump with a Walbro 190/255 and be done with it? (overkill, but I'm planning a 3.0 swap anyway) I guess after 156k it just gave up the ghost after I repaired the secondaries and added spirited driving lol.

Interesting to see I have one of the first ones made.

What 3L are you going to go with, I've seen a lot good 05' Taurus engines with low miles.

I'm surprised my pump haven't gave out, I'm slowly finding out some of the fluids and other piping is still original.

B3NN3T told me about hybrid, so going that route. But yeah an 04/05 Taurus is one of the candidates. I missed out on an 04 with 700 miles for 450$ by literally 2 minutes. I was bummed.

Bought mine from an elderly couple who changed oil and thats it. My 20+ year old brake fluiid was not pretty when I did brakes. Refilled with Dot 6 and its been great.

I missed out on a whole roush cougar for 275$ recently, that hurt lol, been trying to find leather seats with air bags for ever and I just cant.

If you look on car part they have some decently priced Taurus engines for under 500$ with only 70k miles.
