engine light

my 99 merc is fine but the engine light seems to come on. when i rev it to 4 or 5 for a day or 2 the light come on and will somtmies go away a few days later or just shiftin at 3 but i took it to the shop and they said it might be a glithc in the thermostat but the next day i drove it it came back on. do u know wat it oculd be or how to fix it , i don t have much money so i need to do itm y self

does it flicker on and off? If so you're misfiring.

Does your car feel sluggish? Check your plug wires for proper connection. It could be that one of the wires is coming loose from time to time.
Get a diagnostic at Autozone.
