well yesterday night driving home from work my engine light comes on. doesn't turn its self off all the way home. so its on for about 25 minutes. i get home check all wires connections and all clamps to the cold air extension i recently installed both before fest and during and everything looks ok. disconnect the battery negative side and engine light went away. i know that i should of had it checked first but i have not time since i came home from fest. i feel if it comes on again today then there is a defiant problem and it will need to be addressed. the same code came up 9201. the universal code for bull sh!t. if you guys have any suggestions please let me know. thanks!

mine comes and goes. my first issue was transmission, then it was my o2 sensors. now its fuel to air ratio.
it kicks on at 3/4 full then cuts out after 20-30miles then shuts off then comes on when it beeps at 50miles left and stays on until fill up. after a while it becomes "part" of a feature for you car. but unless you can figure out how to get it to go away without unplugging it let me know.

Yeah, I slightly over reacted...I found out today my Cat. is failing, started freaking out cause that thing + labor is expensive.

Then I found out a miracle...8/80,000 emissions warrenty! WOO HOO!

On that note, I can't wait to get that CAI on my car, I wanna hear what it sounds like on the cougar so bad.

IIRC 9201 is the inefficient catalyst bank 1 code (right? or am I wrong?) Anyway, since youre all gutted and stuff I guess the car is finding out somehow (MIL eliminators on the O2 sensors right? I hope) and throwin the code. I had my manifold replaced by ford but you wont wanna do that- just check the connections on the O2's and stuff. Maybe draggin made them loose? If youre not running mil eliminators on the sensors then that will likely take care of the problem and maybe your super-rich situation. Good luck and report back.

well yesterday on the way home the light came back on. so first thing this morning i took it in. as for the o2 sensors they are all plugged in. even on the test pipe. the guy at the dealership thought it might be one of my clamps not sealed right and that could cause the light to come on. i do not know any more. i just want the problem fixed. i will keep ya posted.

got my car back last night and here is what they said was the problem.

a check engine - amber (mil) light on
12650m eec test system
9643cp

24170 check out, test eec system, p0420 clear code

cool thing was they only charged me $39.14 for everything.

now what they told me that meant was being that i have a test pipe and no back pressure it will through a code. to fix it they said just disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. now i do not want to do this every day or every week.

so my question is, i have the o2 sensor welded into the test pipe but i guess that doesn't help, so would a mil eliminator fix the problem? and how much do they cost? and can someone help me with that? i do not want to mess with the computer.

YOYO, Don here is what ya need since I just did this the week before fest. This will help ya out huge and keep your cell away...
PS, if I were you I would ditch the test pipe and gut your stock cat pipe. I did and it shaved over .4 of a second off my drag time alone. Thats running the exact same setup with a gutted main cat over my last years time. Then .9 difference with nitrous.
But heres the link for the MIL Eliminator, they come with directions and took me 5 mins to install. MIL Eliminator

if i get one would you be able to help john? i do not want to mess with this unless someone is there to help. the electrical side of the car scares the sh!t out of me. as for getting rid of the test pipe...hmm let me see if it helps my times any this wednesday at norwalk. if it does not then i just may take your advice and ditch it. but damn it sounds sweet!

thanks,

don

Hey Gebb'ster, hopefully those eliminators work- I think you just plug them into the harness between the plug and the sensor right? like adding a resistor between the sensor and the plug. Then again, I might be wrong.

What I really wanted to jack this post for is that I'd like to hire your photo services sometime this summer and prolly again in the fall when the leaves turn. Mom just bought a new very old house in Lakewood and it has this cool ivy gazebo thing in the back yard. I was thinkin of getting some good pics with Diane and Paco there. Also, I think mom would like some "before" pics of before they start some improvements. Ill ask her bout it more. Ill talk to Diane bout it and let you know.

To all: Gebby takes amazing photographs so all of you who want those cool pics of your cars in sweet locations at sundown etc, you should beg him to do it for you. Oh, and freaking pay him you cheap bastards!

heh- hope youre ok with this Don. :)

Geb's car has ONE O2 sensor downstream that needs an eliminator. And it just plugs in between the O2 sensor and the harness. Could not possibly be easier to do. I have 2 of them because my car's a gross polluter...

And PLEASE stop with the disgnostic mode. CEL's are not addressed by the disgnostic mode - it's an entirely different system.

sorry andy about the diagnostic mode mumbo jumbo but i worry to much sometime. and i don't recall me ever calling anything a CEL but if i did i apologize.

It's cool - I think we just have a crossed wire in our communication.

CEL is short-hand for Check Engine Light. When the Check Engine Light comes on, like yours has, the code for it is stored DEEP in the car's on-board computer. The diagnostic mode dashboard readout is not able to access these stored codes - it has its own DIFFERENT set of codes, which do NOT cause the Check Engine Light to come on.

You could easily be showing a hundred different Diagnostic Mode codes on your dashboard readout and never have a Check Engine Light.

Likewise, you could have a constant Check Engine Light and never show ANY Diagnostic Mode codes.

The 2 are not related.

Anyhows, for my 2 cents, I'm 99% POSITIVE your test-pipe is causing your CEL. A swiftly-placed MIL Eliminator will get rid of that once and for all.

MIL eliminators are simple to install. No soldering or splicing involved (unless you make one). You just plug one end of it onto the O2 sensor harness and plug the other end onto the car's wiring harness and your done. Clean, quick, and simple.
