I was wondering does the Cougar have some sort of FoMoCo production code name?

Like when talking about Mustangs everyone knows SN95 is 1994-2004, S197 is 2005-14 and S550 is 2015 and up.

Does the Cougar have anything similar?

Or did everyone in the US just call it the New Edge?
Since outside the US it only was one generation under Ford the only thing one could (and often does) confuse it with was the Kuga (Escape).

New Edge was how it was identified in the States. CDW-27 is the chassis code, although that also includes the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique.

Yea CDW-27 is the Platform but there has to be a Cougar specific code name.
Like the Concept Cars name "MC2"

Alright so I don't know how I managed to do that but I somehow got in contact with someone that worked on the Cougar from the clay concept through launch and then on the refresh and ST200 programmes.

He told me:

"Cougar started out as a European, probably Genk in Belgium so it was S164 (which is still on my hole punch), then the realised they didn't have a low volume product to put into the joint Mazda plant in Flat Rock in the US, It was all a bit of a financial bodge & the death knoll for Cougar from being a really great car to a lost leader. It became SW164"

Oh, right. The engine build manual calls it SW164
