I've got 70k on my ATX and it pulls ok in comparision to the Grand Am ATX I've had in the past... I've never driven an MTX Coug so I can't compare the two, but the ATX is fine for me.

*2000 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6 = 170hp / 165tq (3020lbs)
2000 Grand Am GT 3.4L V6 = 170hp / 200tq (3100lbs)
2000 Chrysler Seabring 2.5L V6 = 168hp / 170tq (3450lbs)
2000 Chevy Malibu 3.1L V6 = 170hp / 190tq (3050lbs)

Given the above information, I don't think the Cougar is that bad... Should be able to kick the crap out of the Seabring though...

...you must not have looked very hard.
heh yeah, that was my "arm-chair tech" response for the day...
- i just looked in that little brain / memory of mine

as i was writing, i was trying to think of which v6's had less than 170... i figured there couldn't be more than a handful...

The cougar was a substantial upgrade for me. Went from a 4 banger 83 celica with no paint and whitewall 14" wheels and 16 speakers ...to a 99 v6 with hell of a lot of dings and scratches with painted 16" rims and only 9 speakers...counting all the tweeters mind you.
So I guess im fortunate to gain 62 hp and paint.

It's not really that bad, the drivetrain loss is actually about 25%. That's still crappy, but if it were really 40% the V6 ATXs would barely be putting 100hp to the wheels (102 to be exact).

Lol I wish! Mine put 114 to the wheels at fest. If you were trying to go fast mercurycougar you bought the wrong car. IMHO the Cougar was made to look good(think about it except for the really early muscle car ones(made to go fast), all the other coug's were kinda luxury carish), while a car like the Mustang GT was made to go fast. If I were Ford I wouldda made the coug like this:

Regular Package(Offered ATX/MTX):
2.5 170 HP Duratec

Performance Package(MTX only):
Factory Supercharged 2.5L 250 HP Duratec

I mean look at what GM did with the New School Impala. You have your regular 3400 one with like 170ish Hp then you have the new SS with a supercharger and like 240ish hp.

It used to be one of the higher hp V6's back in 1999, but then after that every single car suddenly came with 200hp or more. My old 3.8 V6 T-bird only had something like 150 hp.

Edit: I sacrificed a manual to get the color I wanted, but I'm becoming more pleased with it after more mods, I'd even say it's pretty quick now.

well now you're comparing crank hp to fwhp. An auto civic EX will probably get about ~100fwp and sub 100fwqt

I know how you feel, to me, being my first car, the cougar seems pretty nice. I have to agree with you that the cougar was designed to look nice, not go fast.Today for example, mind you i have little experience racing, raced a stock, four cylinder lancer, mtx. I did the little 1,2,d thing and got him a little off the line but he pulled ahead and got me in 2-3rd. We only went to about 80 mph and by this time he was about 4 ft leading. I may have done something wrong or the ATX is just slow. O well it was fun.
