you know the sound the a/c compressor makes when there isn't enough freon in the system? that what it sounds like when the heat is on, it's coming from somewhere in the engine bay

Are you using one of the defrost settings? That will kick on the compressor.

Well, it'll click when it cycles on and off. If it's clicking rapidly then it may be low on R-134a or something else might be wrong.

Also, it only runs in the two "defrost" settings (well, plus the two "A/C" settings, but those are obvious). The heat-only setting, which I think is denoted by an arrow pointing at a person, does not run the compressor. Try that setting and see if you still hear the clicking.
