Cam Gears

I feel its time to do something else to my car. its been almost a year since ive gotten my intake and I want something more. I am debating between a chip, exhuast, or cam gears.
But i have a question about the cam gears. I can put one inplace of the stock intake or exhaust cam, or both. If I just bought one cam, which would be more beneficial to me. and what kind of power would i see adding 1 cam and from adding two cams? I know since I have the VCT CTA motorsports only sells one cam, but ZXTuner sells an exhaust cam gear adaptor. and what kind of advantages would i get from being able to adjust the degress on the cams? whaddya think?

You could get anywhere from 5 to 20 hp from tuning cam gears depending on how off the timing on your car is from the factory. Most VCT zetecs see around 5 to 10 hp gain.

You'll need a chip to disable the check engine light cause if you disable the VCT it will trip a cell. When I swapped engines we messed up the timing on my VCT and decided to just get the adapter and the other gear and disable the whole thing.

whats the difference in AEM and Unorthadox Racing, other than the fact UR is 100 bucks more for underdrive pulleys? same for cam gears too

I don't know about pulley's. I got the gears from zxtuner.com. They're mainly an Escort shop but our engines are basically the same. They've got the cheapest Gears I've seen and also sell the adapters.

hey seawulf, what kind of tuning did u do to the cam gears? did you do it or did you have someone else do it? and what were the most gains you saw?

if you have the vct on your car you can only put the exhaust gear on un less you pull out the vct and get a chip or piggy back computer (venom 400 that will do the advance with out gears) you also may change the cams with out touching the gears (best) you can get the cams from zxtuner. they are great people there, if you change you cams change your springs and retainers. I have pullys they r great I felt a better responce

Haven't tuned them yet. Depending on circumstances I probably won't get to tune them till around December. Typically turbo'd cars see twice the gains from tuned gears as NA cars, so hoping to see 20hp gain.

If you have the VCT it's the intake gear you can change not the exhaust, unless you have a chip to disable the cell or an obd-II scanner to clear the light you might want to start with the pulley's and leave the gears for later.
