I purchased this 2000 Cougar v6 for my son's senior year in High School, and here I sit 3 weeks into his first year of college and he has succeeded in overheating the 2.5 and ruining the engine. We heard some talk about a 3.0 conversion, and since I have been in th automotive industry for over 17 years I thought it might be something I could do. He has since purchased a 2000 3.0 S code engine with low miles and I am getting ready to tear it down, but thought I would get some input on the engine choice, whether it will be OK with and automatic, and what direction I should go in first. I don't really want to go into it if this is the wrong engine choice. Please give me some direction.

Anything 2000 and older is probably the worst choice. They didn't have a water pump on the head so you'll have to run an electrical water pump which can be a huge pain. 2001+ is generally what people go with. 2004-2005 3L's is what most prefer. You can still use the 2000 motor but it will take more work.
