it doesnt stand for anything, just a code name for v8 racing engines back in late 70s and followed into 4 cyls in early 80's with ohv engines. Then around 1992 it became a dohc engine. They have been doing minor things since, mostly headwork. This is my understanding.
as far as my understanding is it's simply the name of the engine...now i thought i was absolutely sure about this until came back to this post...everyone i've asked said it's just the name of the engine just like duratec, triton, etc....i could be wrong
