Good day folks, I recently replaced the starter on my Cougar (which was one royal PIA) because it was 20 years old with what I believe to be the original starter and it still will not crank. What do you suggest I check? I need some direction here.
Thanks in advance

Does it at least click when you hit the key, or is it entirely unresponsive?

There’s the mega fuse on the cable behind the UIM that runs to the alternator. It’s in a plastic case with the engine wiring loom.

And whichever fuses are called out in the manual for the starter and charging system. I don’t know off the top of my head. Do you hear the fuel pump prime when turning the key to accessory?

Run a jumper cable between the battery and the starter to confirm the battery cable. Just doing a visual inspection or continuity check with a multi-meter will not be sufficient because the cable gets degraded under the insulation.
