I have been searchin around about top speed. I think mine is 141 because I have an XR. Is this true,and if so what happens when I reach this speed?

Thats about the average top speed of the average v6. I have not been up there in a while, I dont think it would make it now. But as for what happens...ever seen Speed Racer?

Top end on my 2000 v6 is in the 140s and with 51000 miles too

Where the hell where you guys and why the hell do you want to go this fast? Fastest I've ever been was 115 in my cougar on a backroad. I was smoking a sunfire gt, well actually i passed him back at like 70 but he used to talk smack all the time so I wanted to prove a point.

I've been up to 143-145 MPH. The car shuts down around these speeds and you run out of tach at 7000 RPM. I regularly cruise at 125-130 MPH on the AUTOBAHN. The autobahn is getting crowded now-a-days and there are many more speed limit areas than 10 years ago. The truck traffic from the east and some pig-headed drivers can really be a pain. The Bear breaks I have were the best investment for high speed driving. nothing like going from 225 KPH to 100 KPH in a rapid slow down! Got a ticket for driving too aggressively a few months ago. Caught by a camera too close to the car in front at 90 MPH.

hit 128 here and the car just wouldnt go anymore in my non-sport v6 (tear tear) but now that i have the chip it supposedly resets it. ive yet to try it but maybe eventually ill get up there.

I hit a 136mph on the highway but had to slow down because of traffic, it was still going up but struggling to get any more

The 99-02 Cougar with the sport's package is drag limited, not electronically limited. In 5th gear, that comes between 143 and 145. I personally have been up to 132 when I started to run out of straight road.

We just ran 144 in the 1/8 mile with my Dad's race car thats a 5.04 E.t. at 3000lbs and 10.5" tires. Oh yeah and 23lbs of Boost...

You tell em Eric...I have had mine up to about 120 mph...I know the atx shifts out of 3rd at like 110 mph...once in 4th (overdrive) need to be down hill or at least flat land...will does have too much power to run uphill in 4th...Need to find a nice long stretch...but need to fix the warped rotor before...Need that stopping power to be there and hold the car straight as I am stopping :biggrin:

I was just seeing if you guys were paying attention. Jeez you don't have to get all bent out of shape. I've been 130 in my 99 MTX and ran out of road. If we could put a higher gear, (lower numerically), the thing would go faster but take longer to get there unless you had a turbo or supercharger on it. I haven't found anything that is higher than ours though. Only 4.10 and 4.50 gears which would make acceleration better but top speed less.

Focus.... its a 3.83 i think... what do you mean you havnt found it... its all over the board. Calc it out and you may find you wont have the power to get it there with that gear anyways.... not to mention it would slow the acceleration and drasticly increase your 0-60 and you e.t.

Or... you could be semi inteligent and gear for a REALISTIC top speed that youll be crossing the eyes at.... who cares if you can limp to 150 if you run 15 second 1/4's. You are DEFINATLY taking the wrong car for a high speed run... and i realize the cougar isnt exactly a good car for anything having to do with speed but top speed runs are DEFINTALY not the thing to use our car for....

I really don't have much care for top speed. I was just commenting that I was at 130. I guess that I got wrong info from a ford flier saying that the final drive was 3.47 in the coug MTX. oh well It happens sometimes. I will be getting one of those 3.83 gears for some testing. I think that I will work well on a FI 3L. We had to put a 3.50 gear in my fathers mustang just to get it to launch and we've only got a 1.76 first gear. We went from 3.89 and picked up two tenths in the 1/8. The higher gear will definately help with wheel hop. I'm sure that the foci guys are putting in our gears because they have a 4 bannger and no torque. Thats a big thing with gears (torque multiplication) and I'm sure that you know that. I hit 127 on my speedo heading down the Jersey Turnpike cuz I was late for my court date. (hahah) After that , realized that someone in the next lane probably can't see you coming, and if they do, they have no idea how fast you are going cuz they usually just glance in the mirror, IMO not a good idea to pull off unless its totally clear.
