I was rung 205/55R16s when I used my Cougar in the winter. In the summer I run 225/50R16s

How would you describe the difference in the ride?

Hard to say, since the winter tires are a different compound than the summer tires. Let's just say, that if I was choosing a size for every day use, I'd never go smaller, I'd go with the 225/50R16. I only went smaller in the winter for traction purposes in snow and ice.

    Re: What will fit?

I run 195/60/R16's on my winter rims, and 225/45/R17's on my summer rims, and I've never looked at what was on the 01 since I've driven it so little.

Ride is a combination of tire compound, size, and pressure. My winter tires (Blizzack WS80's) are kept at 36 PSI, road noise is minimal, and grips very well on snow and slush, better than my old WS60's which were 205/55R16, and are still fun to throw around in a corner. My summer tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE71R's) are kept at 38 PSI, make quite a bit of road noise, though a bit less than my old KDW2's, throw rocks at me if I stick my hand out the window, and grip the ground like nobody's business dry or wet. I benchmark my tires on a roundabout near my house, the WS60's could take it at around 35, the WS80's at around 40, the KDW2's around 45, and the RE71R's at around 48-50 without understeer.

Stuart, did you have issues with clearance on the 17s, offset wise? what wheels are on the car? I'd like to up to 17s for brake / caliper clearance down the line, but between by budget and offset concerns, I'm not sure what to grab.

Not sure itll help but my 17 konig unknowns fit perfect with 225/45s. not totally sure the backspace but I bought them off ebay so you should be able to find some with the backspace listed.

    Straight lines make me giggle.
