need some input on a caliper issue

ok well i've got the 260mm rotors and rear drums right now. i've got 90% of the parts i need to do the bigger front and rear disc swaps. i have some old used calipers that i've collected in my parts collection. i bought them used from other people so i have no clue how many miles or how old they are. the point i'm at now is questioning replacing them. is there a way i can see if these are good and even need replacing? i'm thinking i should get new/rebuilt ones just to be safe. also, does anyone know about rebuilding calipers? i found on teamford that they have rebuild kits. so i'm kinda debating what i should do. any thoughts?

Re: need some input on a caliper issue

all you pretty much need to rebuild them is the seals on them which come in the rebuild kit

Re: need some input on a caliper issue

I haven't seen rebuild kits for our calipers. You can get rebuilt calipers for $30-35 a piece though, so that's the route I went.

Re: need some input on a caliper issue

As long as they don't leak fluid, and the pins slide freely, they should be fine...

Re: need some input on a caliper issue

Here's a couple options:

Buy new ones from ford... expensive and no warranty
Buy new ones from autozone, napa, advance.... cheaper but with warranty
Buy some from junkyard, might not work buy can return for another set.... a waste of time IMO.
Use what you got and hope it works.

Personally if you are strapped for cash I would use what you have but buy a set from autozone and keep until you get the swap complete. Have the new set ready and waiting in case there is a problem. You don't want to have to run to autozone or wait for parts if they don't have them in stock. Return them later after you are satisfied with what you have.

Re: need some input on a caliper issue

you can get new calipers with pads from BAT for $100/pair. i am thinking about buying a set and shipping them to blu_fuz for powdercoating before i install them.
