Massive Zena Alternator Custom Install

If you thought I was crazy after reading about my inverter, you're going to think I'm psychotic after seeing this.

So I have been fed up with my alternator problems. The worst part wasn't that it didn't put out enough power, it was trying to get to the stupid thing to replace or modify it. Other than that, I also didn't like the fact that every time it floods (which BION is quite often in Kingsville, TX), my alternator cuts out and then my windshield wipers might as well not even be on for how slow they run on battery. I tried two different 200A rewound "high performance" alternators and those couldn't put out even 150A at 3,000 RPM and they apparently ran way too hot and failed earlier than the stock ones I've been using. Anyway, I decided to fix all my problems by installing a true high performance Zena alternator on top of the engine where alternators are supposed to be. I'm a little more than half way done with the install and things are coming along better than I expected. I am going to have a body shop cut a giant hole in my hood and make a very large bump similar to the small one in the eclipses. I'm not really sure how that's going to look, but I'll take the functionality over the looks any day. I think the charging system is the last weak system left in my car. After this I might be finished modifying... although I'm always thinking of new things to put in my car that others wouldn't even consider.

Just like a massive erector set:

I second "thats crazy"

ever thought about relocating the coolant tank and putting it in that openning facing the other way, then you don't have to cut the hood or anything?

seat for circus midgits in the summer time

Wow. want to see how this turns out. You also have the added heat of the engine bay to deal with now. Before, the alt was down the bottom so wen the heat rises it was somewhat ok. but now...I really want to see this work out. Great ideas.. good luck!

Re: Massive Zena Alternator Custom Install

What about relocating the colant resevoir and putting the alt in there? Take alittle more work, probably need to extent the shaft or make a new pulley but I think that would be a better location?

Re: Massive Zena Alternator Custom Install

Just ran outside to take a peek under the hood... Here's my idea, relocate the colant tank, or make it smaller. Relocate the washer tank, the fill nozzle is in the way. Move some lines around to make some room. You now have a nize cozy spot for an alternator.

Mount the alternator, pulley towards the engine. Mount a second pully onto the crankshaft. Run a belt up to the alt with a tensioner.

I'm not to sure, but it would probably be best to have the alt mounted to the engine correct? Well there's a couple ways I can see it being done... But I'd probably need to draw it...

Another Idea, Relocate the battery, install a CAI or SRI to free up some space, see if you can run an alt over there? You may have more space over there? I don't know.

But for cooling, cut away some of the sheet metal bellow the alt and you can allow some of the air coming in from the front of the car to move across the alt...

My 2 cents...

Re: Massive Zena Alternator Custom Install

You can buy my supercharger kit and replace the head unit with an alternator which does exactly what is mentioned above.
