a guy.. whats his name.. warmonger.. yea hes good at tuning
I had Tom retune my car last night. I did some data logging and had him rid of my crappy tune.
Danger of Dyno tunes (taken directly from his email) It looks like the adaptive learning has been turned completely off for one. That means your car cannot correct itself if the computer detects the air fuel is off. The STFTs are fluctuating quite a bit and so is the idle. Your bank1 downstream sensor looks like it is unplugged or dead. Do you have any check engine lights? (there is no CEL's) Your upstream O2 sensors seem to be working but you need to datalog a bit more time at idle. Maybe the 20sec, then go for a bit of a cruise datalogging the whole time. While you are cruising do a 3rd gear pull then come to a stop and let it idle another 15-20 seconds. Then I"ll get a better idea of what the idle is looking like. All I can see are fluctuations right now. Next, after some discussion (since we've determined theres really no mechanical issues with my car)- Well if you have a "dyno tune" from these guys and they told you your downstream O2s are shut off then WHY are you still showing voltages on Bank2 rear sensor? Good question huh? WHY did they turn off the adaptive learning? Probably because they don't want the car to detune their tune. I get the impression they don't know a lot about tuning this car. The adaptive learning is one of the best weapons you have in this PCM to counteract changes in climate and temperature. Oh well. So after some more discussion, here is the conclusion- This should hook you up with better timing, IMRC points, fuel, idle speed, Rev limit set to 7200, no speed limiter, and some other secret goodies I've figured out from tuning. So since i have TRW-7 and he programmed for TRW-3 (only TRW series ECU code he had available) , I was good to go since we found the codes were interchangable . I downloaded the tune, deleted my dyno tune, and loaded his up. Started the car up, lights right away. First thing I notice: Exhaust tone is different! The dyno tune make my exhaust pulse sorta, now this tune makes a constant tone. I can see my car is running better already. Took it out for a drive, and my car runs PERFECTLY. I always thought my damn fidanza was looping my idle, and it was just the fact that the car could only run off static values- no dynamic adjustment. The revs don't drop insanely fast like before now, its nice and smooth. Before, my alt would undercharge to 13.5-13.8 volts because the revs were dropping so fast- not even a hint of that now. My car sails to 7200 rpm, nail second, and tires spin for a good 1 1/2 seconds before they catch. Neat!!! Floor it @ 4200 in second, tires start to hop . Now we've determined my 3.0 isn't flowing as much air as some that my setup will, but I know why.. I have a crappy intake tract and possibly not-so-good exhaust. OH, and to top it off, I got 31 MPG on the way to school in country driving with 2 redline pulls. Before I was lucky to get 23-24. I know the trip calculator is not accurate, but the point is to show improvement. I think the computer will show 38+ on the highway, with realistic values of around 30-35 mpg from the 3.0. Thats awesome. The reason I even put my car up for sale is because of the little annoyances- I love the cougar and I was just planning on buying another one to do the build all over- but now that my car runs like factory im happier with the car then I have ever been. And thats alot. If you need a tune, have him do it bottom line. You won't regret it- i've seen both sides of the tuning spectrum and tom's sight-unseen tunes w/ datalogs are superior.. his experience is key.
