breaking in shift cables?

I just installed brand new shift cables in my cougar, pain in the ass by the way. I spent more time messing with these than pulling the engine. They shift nice and smooth now and feel very tight but one thing i noticed is the shifter does not pop back to the center anymore when i come out of the right and left gears. Do they just need to be broken in?? Or is something else wrong?

Re: breaking in shift cables?

There's a spring on the shifter mechanism that centers it. The spring must have broken or come loose. Pull the center console and look.

Re: breaking in shift cables?

I did notice the spring.... It looks like its in place, it actually seems like its not strong enough to put the shifter back into the center.
