99 cougar tranny fluid comingout of filler tube

i just finished install an alternator on my girls car that i have been putting off for about 4 months. finally finished. installed system neon lights. 2 days later tranny leaking. tried to find leak but tranny kept drenching itself. i would check the fluid level, it would say low , then add fluid still sayys low, keep checking without adding anymore fluid. fluid full up dipstick and flowing out. keep checking, fluid low again. don't add fluid. still low, then full up dipstick and spilling. transmission shop says internal problem and wants to rebuild. i don't have funds for that. when i have fluid in it , its shifts perfect til it gets low. i can justice a rebuild when it shifts perfectly fine. i did searches on tranny problems, one article mentioned something about a clogged breather tube. does a cougar even have one? if so where is it located?
