Motor/Tranny swap

I have had a atx 2.0 cougar for a few years now. Recently I just purchased a mtx 2.0 cougar for dirt cheap, because the title is bad, and the frame is bent. I wanted to swap the motor and tranny in my atx cougar. And i found out the the guide for the swap is for the v6 2.5. Does everything still apply to the 2.0? like the wiring and fixing the rev limiter and such? Any sort of information would be much appreciated. Or if anyone knows a contact in the upstate, new york area. Because around here there is no contacts for domestic cars. Oh also, if you need any parts, cosmetic or anything, interior parts, exterior parts,or even headlights. The headlights are in a fair condition, but it is better than nothing, or in my opinion if you need them and dont have the cash to spend 185+ on ebay, let me know.

If im not mistaken it is impossible to swap a V6 into the Zetec Cougars without alot of work.

As for the swap I cant be much help. I know you will need the ECU out the MTX Cougar and the clutch pedal assebly though. lol

Re: Motor/Tranny swap

you could swap a 3l in but at that point you have to get motor mounts, axles, new ecu, wires, wiring harness, etc

i just pulled out a zetec trans/motor out of a contour and it was all pretty similar to when i did my 3l swaps. if you get the haines manual it has the information for the zetec in it. when you pull the new motor out take a lot of pictures and notes as where stuff goes. im not sure on the zetec's but with the duratec's the subframes are different from atx to mtx. you will probably have to swap out the ECU as well and get the PATS fixed at ford, or you can get a chip that will fix all that stuff.

I have a pedal assembly, flywheel, clutch, LSD that ill make you a good deal on if you are interested in any of it just shoot me a pm

Re: Motor/Tranny swap

I know I responded to a PM from you a while ago, but I'll say it again...

Check the subframes to see if they are exactly the same between the atx and mtx. If they are, swap everything from the mtx into the atx, which includes:

motor/tranny combo, (w/ clutch/flywheel still attached)

wiring harness

ECU

PATS chip out of mtx key into your atx key

mtx pedal assembly (clutch and brake) w/ wiring attached to assembly

Motor mounts

axles

Radiator, if the atx one has fittings for atx cooler lines (or just cap the line fittings off)

Shifter assembly w/ cables

Shift boot

That should be everything for the whole swap... you won't need the wiring HOW-to part of the ATX-MTX swap, but almost everything else is the same, except you are swapping the motor also...

Good LUCK, but make sure you verify that the subframes are the SAME, or you will need to find another MTX subframe for the swap to work, as the one you have is bent...

Re: Motor/Tranny swap

They (Ford) actually equipped some of the 2.0 Cougars with ATX's?? I did not know that. I was under the assumption that all the 2.0 Cougars were MTX.

Slushbox Zetec Cougars are the rarest of rare . . . from what I recall, there was something like 500 of them made, and only in the '99 model year. They used the last of the remaining automatics for the Zetec-equipped Contour.

I don't know, is it? I wouldn't think so, but "worth" is a subjective value.

Re: Motor/Tranny swap

My bad I do not know what I was talking about. It is not a 2.5, its another 2.0, lol. Im an idiot. Ive read and researched a little into the 3.0 but the 2.0/zetec just doesn't work, it is better to start with the 3.0. I dont know. I love the cougar body style and with the work I have put into my origional cougar: preformance parts, exhaust, body kits, yeah plural lol and ect. I really dont want to sell mine for basically another cougar that is manual, and start from sqare one again. But maybe I could sell both cougars, and put a down payment on something. I jsut dont want a civic or eclipse they run rampant where I am from. But thanks for anything, I may of found a shop, and I am going to talk to the owner early this week, so how about the super bowl?, Patriots... 18-1, ha.
