Let me start with a little introduction. You know that feeling you get, that vibe, before a race you just KNOW is going to be interesting? Well, I got that vibe as I left the chow hall this morning and started heading back to my office.
So, I rolled out onto the road from the rock and dirt parking lot, and as I turned, I saw my opponent. He was at an intersection about 100 yards away, and turning onto the road I was taking to go to work. Traffic slowed him down a bit, as he had to wait for a few tractor trailers to get out of his way, so I caught up. He blew through a few stop signs, and me, being the safety guy, could not follow in such a manner, so he pulled ahead a little bit.
Finally, he was forced to stop. I was sitting about 10 feet behind him, watching the smokeless exhaust shoot from behind the vehicle. He took off, and I followed, quickly gaining ground. Then I saw the commander in the turret of the M1A2 Abrams tank look back at me and it almost seemed as he laughed, because then the tank rocketed forward and literally left me in its dust. I just couldnt keep up, and my little Chevy LUV was giving all it had.
So yeah, this was one of those races we all go through, where we run up against a real marvel of modern engineering, just to get blown away by it. Thankfully, that was not in a literal sense this time around!
