Gas gauge reads EMPTY, but tank is full

Well it seems now that the needle on my gas gauge wants to stay at EMPTY, except when I first start the car. It will go to wherever it's supposed to be, but after driving for a few seconds, it goes right to "E" and the yellow light comes on. And the digital meter that tells you how far you have to go to fill up reads "---". What could the problem be? Fuse? Is there a sensor for the gas level or something else? This is consistent, it's not one of those 'once in a blue moon' things. And I use the same gas I've been using for the past few years.

so does that mean I have to replace the whole pump? It's working good, I'm not getting any no starts or hesitations.

No no- The sender circuit mounts to the pump, but it's not part of the pump:

It should be replaceable- However, you either need to drop the fuel tank or cut a hole in the floor of your car. Not a simple process either way.

you could just fill the tank full, mark down where your odometer is, have a spare gal of gas in the trunk. drive till you run out of gas, mark down the odometer and then you have a rough esitmate of how far you can go on a tank of gas. my dad used to do that on his old bonneville cause the gauge broke, and everyone used to do that back when there were no gas gauges

I have my stock pump from when they did the recall. There was nothing wrong with the pump when removed. $35 shipped and its yours. You can either replace the whole pump or use the parts needed to get it working. Let me know.
