I hear it only when I accelerate. I was adjusting the throttle and I could hear it every time I adjusted it.

I think you're describing the HLA tap. The hydraulic lash adjusters stick and cause a tapping noise. They're not supposed to do that, but they pretty much all do it, and it's not really hurting anything, so I wouldn't worry about it. See DanG's description of sounds here.

When your rear precatalyst gets obstructed, the exhaust pressure usually blows a hole in the EGR valve somewhere.

I agree, you're probably looking at an exhaust leak. Make sure the EGR valve doesn't have any holes blown in it, and make sure the hoses are both connected to your DPFE sensor.

    Re: ticking sound

So I have something similar to this where I keep getting an Egr Valve error code. Every once in awhile(probably once every other month) the check engine light will flash slowly while idle in my driveway, after probably 10 minutes. As soon as I start driving it stops flashing. I don't normally ever get on my car but a lot of times if I do a little I hear a crackle sound. It sounds like its coming from the area of the exhaust the cat is at. Could this be the issue? I am probably hitting 200k miles today, so I'm sure some things probably need to be replaced soon. I also am running rich it seems because I am getting the smoke from exhaust out the back a little bit. I've also noticed I'm burning through oil pretty quick but haven't seen any on the group like it has a leak, although I wouldn't be surprised.
