Hey everyone. Was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with their '99 cougar's catalysis converter or transmission? I probably one of the select few who bought crappy cougar at the time heh.

I purchased it back in December of '98 and was built back in september of 98. Ofcourse my warranty is dead as I have over 95K miles on the car now =) serious driving. And guess that could be the main reason for the converter hehe. I had one replaced by warranty last year but I moved from AL to TN and these guys won't do the same with the 2nd converter. Which to note, the cougar has 3. Its over $800 to replace so I have just been riding with the engine light for now as it still runs good.

My 2nd problem is the transmission. Every now and then on long drives (250+ miles straight) the transaxle light will appear in the trip computer and flash. At that time it shifts exteremly harse and the RPM's just sore on up. Its not so bad when on a regular highway when it happens but when you are on the interstate doing 75 to 85 straight on and it kicks up like that, you really feel it. Ford doesn't have a clue about the transmission deal. I had them take a look at it when I had another 30K mile tune up done. And which I get my trans serviced every 15K so don't think it has anything to do with not getting it serviced. It hasn't happened here lately which is good. But to resolve the issue when I am on the road, I just pull off, cut the car off for about 5 minutes, start her back up and she's good to go.

Just freak things occuring. And I was tempted to order a new ECU and air filter kit to booste her up to 205hp -- 200ft/lb torque and curious if doing this is going to pretty much make matters worse =)

Which I am sorry to say, i am slightly disappointed in the cougars overall proformance. 1st gear just totally sucks for take off. The ECU will take care of that but gee. Would imagine after the older cougars having big V-8s in them you would expect the new sportier cougar would be somewhat more powered.

    Anyway trailing off subject =)

So to keep my long speech short, anyone else had these same issues? And how bad was it going to get it fixed?

    Thanks

Aren't emission control components covered under warranty for longer than the 3/36? In California I'm pretty sure they are... just not sure for how long or how many miles.
