    96 Contour problem

    i have a 96 contour, 166,000 miles.
    2.5 V6 auto CD4E trans....

transmission was replaced and rebuilt 10,000 miles ago.

i'm starting to have problems with it again, about every other time the car is driven the overdrive OFF light will repeatedly flash off and on, while the car will NOT shift into the next gear. im completely baffled on what could be causing this.

like i said, the trans was replaced and rebuilt, the speed sensor in the trans was replaced with the newer version(to eliminate the bang shift)

also i wanted to note that lately i have had to add trans fluid, but this could be something unrelated... maybe just a leak.

the REAL problem seems to be in the overdrive.
does anyone know if there is a sensor for the overdrive?

    any thoughts?
    thanks

I do know that the O/D light that flashes is the equivalent to the " ! " flashing in a Cougar. It's the same transmission..
Try searching here in the problem & transmission performance forums AND CEG.
Something tells me that whoever rebuilt the trans. may have not done a very good job. But that's just me. Someone else will chime in, I don't know the CD4E that well.

why not take it back to the shop who put it in, didnt mommy and daddy pay to fix it last time?? and why are you asking on here, because everytime i told you exactly what was wrong with your car, you would go pay a shop to tell you the exact same thing i told you

It's a Contour, which you probably know is built on the same platform, so it's within the spirit of the Problems forum.

    Re: 96 Contour problem

Exactly WHAT was rebuilt in your tranny? Multiple things go wrong with the CD4E, including the torque converter, 2-4 band, and planetary gears (from what I hear). I've seen a lot of threads recently posted involving broken 2-4 bands.

You said you had to add fluid. Is it spilling out the overflow? (located beneath battery) In the pre98's, I believe there was just a little nut on the top of the overflow spot, not a hose as was in Cougars and possible 98+ Contours. This nut is loose and can be spun freely but can't be removed (this will help you identify it). If you're overflowing, that means your transmission is likely overheating. This will occur in correlation with a failing torque converter from what I have read. Check your fluid, is it red? Or is it brown and burnt?

    Need some more details...
