RPM's slow to drop when shifting

Greetings everyone! Please bear with me as this is my first post on this forum and I am sure the questions I will ask have been covered numerous times before. So if you can point me in the right direction for the answers it would be greatly appreciated. My son recently purchased a 99 Cougar V6 with 74K miles. Overall the car runs well. However, between gears the RPM's are very slow to drop. Occasionally they even increase slightly before dropping. Where should I begin looking to solve this?

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Ford designed the Idle Air Control Valve to hang a little, to burn off excess fuel and improve emissions scores.

If it hangs excessively, you might need to replace the IACV.

You're describing the throttle hang.

Some hang is normal - I've had my Cougar for 9.5 years and 91,000 miles, and it has always done it. It's done for emissions reasons.

However, some people have excessive hang. It shouldn't last for more than a second or two, but some people have problems where it lasts longer and actually interferes with driving.

I'll just say that putting a copper cap with a hole drilled in it - the usual prescribed solution - is NOT the correct solution to excessive throttle hang.

As B3NN3TT and I said above, if it's dropping within a second or two, it's normal and you shouldn't change anything.
