yes, im now a troll.
it sounds likes its a fuse, take a test light a test all the fuses located under the dash,if not it could be the brake light switch itself(located on the brake pedal lever)but they will usually just stay on when the switch goes bad.

well i checked all the fuses to the brake lights itself so i guess ill have to find one of those switches?
also. when i put in my 01-02 guages the cruise control light is on unless i turn on the headlights .... whats the deal there?

check out this topic: All 3 brake lights out?
and this topic: Brake Lights Not working
hope u find a fix cause im still trying to find a way to fix mine
Wait - you put in a new gauge cluster and the brake lights stopped working at that time?
Although it seems unlikely that's the first place to start. Can you swap in the original cluster and see if they start working again?

Ooooo..this may start an interesting discussion. I also installed an 01-02 gauge cluster in my 99 car shortly before realizing that my brake lights had started to fail. Then I found that the problem was that fried wire and pin to the Lamp Failure Indicator Module. Interesting...I wonder if that could cause the problem somehow. Although, I replaced my module and spliced in all 23-ish of the wires for a new plug and haven't had a problem since...
And yes, my cruise control light is also always on until I turn my driving lights or headlights on....but i never had cruise control as an option but i bought some cruise control parts off of another member, but it has never worked. (I'm assuming it is a cruise control light anyways....it is a green light on the dash with the left group of lights...seems to show a gauge with a needle...)
We might have found the problem....but why, I wonder...?

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me...that's why i never really thought of this as the problem....but I'm not going to rule it out now after finding others that have had the exact same problem. Dang cougar electrical issues... lol
