Resetting ignition code??? Help!!!

Help!!! Is there anyway of resetting the ignition code to get the car to start?? I have a 99 cougar, and the alternator went on me the other day. I've got a feeling now its not recognizing the key. The Battery is fine, and I tried turning over the starter with a screwdriver and it turns over fine. But, when I hit the ignition, there's nothing. A buddy was telling me about the Fords "pats" theft system. So is there anyway of resetting it, without taking it to the garage??
