Hose on top of transmission case: where is it going?

1999 Mercury Cougar, V6, Auto:

We found a disconnected rubber hose (ca. 1/3 in = 8 mm diameter). It has a 90 degree plastic elbow and plastic mounting slot on the loose end. The fixed end ends up in the transmission housing on the top, right under the battery bracket.

When blowing into the hose, trans fluid comes out of the trans dip stick.

We already spent hours trying to find where that hose connects.

Can someone help?

I have a few pics (will try to upload if possible) of the hose.

Need urgent answer (intake, battery, carb, etc are currently all off - can't use the car).

Pics of the hose:

Also, (some related?), the following error codes:

I have one hose coming from the top of the transfercase, which I can't find where it is supposed to go. This may cause/explain some of the error codes.

Any suggestions how to attach those?

P0113:
IAT (intake Air Temp) circuit
The intake air temperature signal is used as an input for various systems in the vehicle
Probable causes:
1. Check connector and wiring
2. Sensor open or shorted – replace sensor

The PCM has determined that the input from the intake air temperature sensor is higher than expected for the current engine operating conditions

P0102
MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure/Baro or MAF (Mass Air Flow) / VAF (Vane Air Flow) sensor condition
All vehicles have one or more of these components. Engine load or the air volume entering the engine is measured by these components. The computer has recognized a return signal error.
Probable causes:
1. Vaccum hose off, cracked or passage blocked – Engine mechanical timing condition
2. Throttle body intake tube loose, off, or cracked
3. Barometer/MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) defective
4. VAF (Vane Air Flow MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor dirty or defective

P1131
Lack of HO2S switch – sensor indicates lean
Lack of Bank 1 02 transitions – Lean Explanation
ECM detected bank 1 02 at its lean limit
Probable causes:
1. Misfire on bank 1
2. Vaccum leak affecting bank 1 only
3. Fuel injector problem bank 1
4. Engine mechanical condition

P0171
The PCM has detected tat during testing, the fuel system for bank 1 was too lean. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank).
Fuel trim bank one condition
The powertrain control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio of the engine.
The computer has recognized a rich or lean condition on one engine bank only.
Probable causes:
1. If bank one and two codes set together suspect fuel pressure of MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor
2. Oxygen sensor defective
3. Ignition misfire – repair
4. Fuel injector problem

P0174
The PCM has determined that during testing, the fuel system for bank 2 was too lean. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank).
Fuel Trim Bank Two Condition.
The EXM has detected a rich or lean air/fuel ratio condition on engine bank two.
Probable cause:
1. If bank one and two are set together suspect a fuel condition or MAF sensor fault
2. Failed H02S1
3. Ignition misfire condition
4. Fuel injector problem

Re: Hose on top of transmission case: where is it going?

the loose hose is a vent hose. Its supposed to be like that, just make sure its not pinched or obstructed in any way. My guess on the codes is either dpfe or clogged egr ports in the UIM. Do some research and that should help you out

Re: Hose on top of transmission case: where is it going?

i just had the same problem with the vent hose. i took the car into the shop, and they buried the vent hose under the battery, so the was no air flow. just make sure it's not being blocked in any way

It comes out from the top of what I think is the transmission housing, right under the battery tray.

yes, its a vent hose/transmittion fluid over flow.

mine got brittle and broke off, its not something you need to worry about.

its an overflow hose, it doesnt connect to anything. its meant to direct WHERE the coolant spills out.

Eh. I didn't notice it was broken until I HAD an overflow. You're right though.
